Description This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to appropriately express own cultural identity through artistic practice. As such this unit has very strong linkages to a wide range of specialisation units within the Visual Arts Craft and Design Training Package.The local cultural knowledge necessary to achieve competency in this unit may only be accessible to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples. This unit also recognises that there is no single Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander culture.This unit deals with complex and interrelated elements of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander cultures which are the cultural and intellectual properties of specific communities. These may only be interpreted by appropriate persons, e.g. those recognised by the local Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community as an Elder or custodian of local cultural knowledge. Any organisation or individual planning to train or assess this unit would be expected to work closely with the local Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community, for example through establishing a local Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander reference group. In particular, it is vital to ensure respectful integration of any local cultural knowledge or protocols that will inform the implementation of the unit.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

Prerequisites/co-requisites It is highly recommended that this unit be assessed with or after the following unit:CUVPRP03B Develop and apply knowledge of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts.This unit also has linkages to a range of other units and combined assessment and/or training with those units may be appropriate, e.g.:units within the Visual Arts Craft and Design Training Packageunits within the Tourism Training Package.

  • Identify appropriate sources of information on cultural identity and the ways in which it can be expressed.
  • Determine appropriate knowledge permitted for cultural expressions.
  • Research and follow appropriate protocols for the production of cultural works, including copyright and intellectual property.

  • Evaluate and use cultural information in an appropriate way in developing a concept for work.
  • Consider cultural information and identity in the development of concept, with due consideration of cultural protocols.
  • Select means of expression for production of work consistent with cultural context and concept.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

The assessment context must provide for:

involvement of persons approved of by Elders of the relevant local community in the assessment process.

Method of assessment

Assessment may incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of essential underpinning knowledge, and might include:

review of work produced by the candidate

oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of issues surrounding cultural protocols for the production of work

review of portfolios of evidence

third party workplace reports of performance by the candidate.

Assessment of this unit requires access to information sources on protocols for the production of work and other cultural information as agreed by the local community.

Assessment Tasks

cultural protocols in relation to the production, presentation and distribution of works which express Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander identity

protocols for the sharing of information and the expression of information pertaining to cultural works.

knowledge and understanding of own/local Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander culture

copyright, moral rights and intellectual property requirements for specific types of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artwork, including issues of appropriation.
