Issue Date: April 2024

Qualification -
Unit of Competency DEFCA003B - Operate a radar to locate targets
Description This unit covers the competency required to operate a radar in order to locate targets and to provide information as directed by the operational plan. Operation of the radar may include; classification, identification, location and navigation. The operator will work as part of a team and will be under supervision. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. In a Defence context, this means that there is no civilian need to hold this unit in order to meet licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements.
Employability Skills This unit contains employability skills.
Learning Outcomes and Application This competency was developed for combat arms personnel required to operate a radar in order to locate targets and to provide information as directed by the operational plan in a deployed operational environment but is applicable to any individual in this field of work.Typically, operators work as part of a team under direct or indirect supervision, use discretion and judgement, and take responsibility for the quality of their outputs. All activities are carried out in accordance with relevant organisational policies and procedures.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria
Element: Set up radar
  • Radar is prepared for operation in accordance with standard procedures.
  • Radar is initialised and used in accordance with standard procedures and manufacturer's instructions.
  • Operational performance and accuracy of the radar is confirmed and appropriate action is taken where performance is out of limits.
  • Misrepresentations and false echoes are detected and discounted.

Element: Operate radar
  • Radar is operated in accordance with standard procedures to produce required data.
  • Data produced by the radar is interpreted and used to assist command decisions, taking into account known limitations and errors associated with the equipment.
  • Faults or difficulties within the operator’s ability to correct are corrected.
  • Any faults or difficulties beyond the operator’s ability to correct are referred to supervisor and action is taken as directed.
  • Data is provided to supervisor or user.
  • Administration is completed in accordance with standard procedures.
  • Operational maintenance is conducted as required.

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Assessment must confirm the ability to interpret directions from supervisors and to carry out each operator task.

Consistency in performance

Competency should be demonstrated on deployment of equipment in a range of different environments.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed in an operational or simulated operational environment. The simulation should replicate the live environment where stress and fatigue are key features.

Specific resources for assessment

Access to appropriate radar equipment and an appropriate field site or a high fidelity simulator.

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assignment, checklist) and due date here

Assessment task 1: [title]      Due date:

(add new lines for each of the assessment tasks)

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

This describes the essential skills and knowledge and their level, required for this unit.

Required Skills

apply relevant WHS requirements

apply operational safety

conduct equipment maintenance

fieldcraft skills including tactical movement and camouflage

standing orders

written and verbal orders

Appropriate action may include:

correcting faults using basic fault finding skills

reentering data

reporting to supervisor

Limitations and errors may include:

visual inspection

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
