Version 1.0
Issue Date: March 2024

Qualification -
Unit of Competency DEFCA016 - Use individual protective equipment in a CBRN threat environment
Description This unit covers the competency required to prepare and utilise individual protective equipment in chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear (CBRN) threat environment. The individual will be responsible for preparing the protective equipment prior to deployment and once in location utilise the equipment to provide individual protection from a CBRN threat. Compliance with procedures, including the functional testing of the equipment, is an essential part of this unit. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. In a Defence context, this means that there is no civilian need to hold this unit in order to meet licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements.
Employability Skills This unit contains employability skills.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria
Element: Prepare respirator and protective clothing and equipment ensemble to meet CBRN threat
  • Respirator and ensemble requirements are identified, prepared, assembled and function tested.
  • User maintenance on respirator and ensemble are conducted.
  • Faulty equipment is rejected and/or reported.

Element: Plan and prepare for combat arms tasks
  • Equipment is used to meet operational tasking and workplace requirements.
  • Authorised CBRN drills are used to detect threats/hazards, carry out decontamination hazard reduction measures and to prepare and utilise equipment to meet changes in the operating environment, changes in threat, detection of hazards and the occurrence of an CBRN incident.
  • Confirmatory function testing of equipment is conducted periodically during operations.

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Assessment must confirm the ability to:

identify, prepare, assemble and function test CBRN respirator and ensemble

use CBRN respirator and ensemble to meet operational tasking and workplace requirements

use authorised CBRN drills to detect threats/hazards, carry out decontamination hazard reduction measures and to prepare and utilise equipment to meet changes in the operating environment, changes in threat, detection of hazards and the occurrence of an CBRN incident

Consistency in performance

Competency should be demonstrated over time and across a range of simulated or actual workplace situations and is to include exposure to CS gas or a simular non-lethal chemical agent.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed in the workplace or in a simulated workplace environment.

Specific resources for assessment

Access is required to:

organisational CBRN publications

organisational CBRN workplace operating procedures

authorised CBRN drills

task specific CBRN equipment

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assignment, checklist) and due date here

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

This describes the essential skills and knowledge and their level, required for this unit.

Required Skills

identify, inspect, prepare and clean respirator and clothing and equipment ensemble

follow instructions/directives and report information

identify basic equipment faults

use respirator and ensemble

provide reports on faulty equipment

read and apply standard procedures

Required Knowledge

equipment preparation and handling procedures

policy and procedures relevant to the operation of NBC equipment

responsibilities of individuals for operating equipment

CBRN threat awareness

CBRN individual protective procedures

respirator and clothing and equipment assemble available for use

The Range Statement relates to the Unit of Competency as a whole. It allows for different work environments and situations that may affect performance. Bold italicised wording in the Performance Criteria is detailed below.

Ensemble clothing and equipment may include:

apron

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
