Description This unit covers the competency required to command, lead and manage infantry personnel of up to sub-unit size (about 130) under extreme conditions in a high-risk environment. It therefore requires supervisors to be incisive in a fluid and demanding environment, to act independently and to lead by example.Command is the authority a commander in the military service lawfully exercises over subordinates by virtue of rank or assignment.

Learning Outcomes and Application The application of this unit in the workplace - the environments, complexities and situations involved - will be written during Phase II of the Review of the PUA00 Public Safety Training Package.This text will be useful for the purposes of job descriptions, recruitment advice or job analysis; where possible, it will not be too job specific to allow other industries to import it into other Training Packages, where feasible.

Element: Prepare and plan for infantry operations
  • Ability of subordinates to complete the task is confirmed in accordance with standard procedures
  • Personnel administration is actioned in accordance with standard procedures
  • Orders are received and clarified as necessary to determine commander's intent
  • Constraints and risks relevant to the task are determined and managed in accordance with standard procedures
  • Appropriate resources for the task are assembled, and any shortfalls that limit capability are reported to the chain of command
  • Occupational health and safety (OH&S) requirements and recognised safety precautions are applied throughout the operation in accordance with standard procedures
  • Planning decisions to solve operational problems are made based on a logical process

  • Post activity analysis is conducted and subsequent recommendations are made in accordance with standard procedures
  • Equipment, stores and ammunition are reconditioned, replaced or returned as applicable
  • Documentation is completed in accordance with standard procedures
  • Subordinates' health and well-being is monitored and any anomalies are referred or fixed

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed commanding an infantry sub-unit and should replicate the command requirements described in the Range Statement. The individual should be exposed to the extremes of the operational environment where a person is under physical and mental stress. The context of assessment would usually be simulated due to the nature of this high-risk environment.

Specific resources for assessment

Access to infantry personnel of up to a sub-unit size (about 130), its weapons and equipment, and appropriate operating areas.
