Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to inspect and monitor water distribution for safe water handling practice as a member of the Australian Defence Force (ADF).It includes monitoring water distribution point, storage and equipment.This unit applies to Defence personnel required to monitor water handling and distribution.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.Persons undertaking this unit work independently and perform routine tasks in a range of familiar contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, which include requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations, where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Resources for assessment must include access to:

a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or other simulations

relevant and appropriate materials, tools, equipment, stores and personal protective equipment currently used in industry

relevant documentation including operational procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals.

  • Perform routine monitoring of water storage and distribution points to assess standard of safe water handling practices
  • Perform field water testing to determine the quality of water, in accordance with operational procedures

  • Quarantine and report equipment suspected of contamination or not approved for water storage and distribution, to relevant stakeholders

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two separate occasions and include:

applying legislation, regulatory standards and organisational policies and procedures

communicating and consulting with stakeholders

implementing control measures of disease transmission

implementing safe water handling practices

implementing water quality assurance measures

interpreting data gathered in the field against quality standards in national water quality guidelines

recognising unsafe water or water storage containers

researching causes of disease transmission

taking action to prevent disease and illness.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

aetiology of water-borne diseases

control measures of disease transmission

health surveillance system

relevant legislation, standards, and organisational policies and procedures

risk management principles

safe water handling practices and guidelines.
