Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to prepare and conduct pointing operations of hardwood and softwood material using cutter or saw type machinery. The unit applies to operators who produce pointed timber products in a forest products factory setting.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

The following resources must be made available:

tools and equipment used to produce pointed timber products:

manually loaded equipment

rotating cutters and saws

maintenance tools and equipment for rotating cutters and saws

consumable components; cutters and saw blades

personal protective equipment suitable for producing pointed timber products

timber used to produce pointed timber products

manufacturers’:

instructions for equipment use

recommendations for cleaning, repairing and maintaining

work order with specific details of:

material to be pointed

special client requirements

production timelines

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

  • Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
  • Select appropriate equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Plan pointing operations in line with work order.

  • Follow lock out procedures and adjust machinery to suit size and type of timber to be processed.
  • Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions environmental protection practices.
  • Produce posts and pegs at optimal rate consistent with material type, acceptable surface finish and equipment capability.
  • Monitor pointing operation to ensure consistency of product dimension, quality and finish in line with organisational quality standards.
  • Monitor shaving and sawdust removal system to ensure waste material is effectively controlled.
  • Coordinate supply of material with appropriate personnel and report timber faults.
  • Sort and process finished products in line with organisational procedures.
  • Identify routine processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel.

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

produce pointed timber products in line with an individual work orders, which includes the following types of posts:

round poles covering the full range of sizes for which the equipment is suitable

rectangular sawn material covering the full range of sizes for which the equipment is suitable

complete these types of basic non-specialist maintenance:

cleaning the machine of wood chips and sawdust

replacing blunt cutters or saw blades

inspecting machine parts for wear or damage, including guards

greasing and lubricating moving parts

checking the operation of emergency stop buttons and lock out systems.

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for forest products factory settings:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing timber

typical timber defects and how these affect ability to produce a quality finished product:

warp

wane

cupping

shakes

insect defects

knots

resin pockets

stages of the pointing process
