Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to manage the planning of forest coupe establishment, harvesting and regeneration.The unit applies to job roles including Arboriculture Manager, Forest Manager, Forestry Manager, Harvesting Manager, Nursery Manager, Plantation Establishment Manager, Plantation Manager and Production Manager.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.There may be Codes of Practice applicable to coupe planning in some areas and for some forest types.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

The following resources must be made available:

organisational policies and procedures relevant to coupe planning

relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information

documents, spreadsheets and commonly used proforma documents

PPE suitable to managing coupe planning

a suitable forest area.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

Element: Plan coupe establishment
  • Establish local authority coverage, land ownership and boundaries.
  • Check coupe location including map and grid references.
  • Identify and apply for land use zoning and planning permits.
       
Element: Plan coupe harvesting
  • Analyse forest type, available species and topography and document in line site procedures.
  • Calculate gross area of coupe and net area to be harvested.
  • Calculate and report volume estimates.
  • Plan operational activities including site preparation, environmental considerations and access.
  • Issue tenders and award harvesting and cartage contracts and establish cartage routes.
  • Develop, check and communicate schedule for harvesting.
