Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to plan and coordinate timber drying procedures. It includes managing the kiln and the schedules for drying timber.The unit applies to operators who dry timber in a forest and wood products factory setting.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

The following resources must be made available:

kiln or vacuum dryer

timber for drying

relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information

documents, spreadsheets and commonly used proforma documents

personal protective equipment required for co-ordinating timber drying operations.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. assess, schedule and coordinate drying procedures for the enterprise

monitor drying operations and output, and make necessary modifications

coordinate timber drying operations for efficiency and safety

resolve problems so that production schedules are met

coordinate personnel to follow schedules for timber drying operations throughout all stages of the process.

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

kilns and their features which must include:

low temperature kilns

conventional

high temperature kilns and vacuum dryers

timber characteristics, timber moisture content and how to avoid cracking and deforming of timber in the drying process

charge sheets

the safe disposal of waste material

organisational and site policies and procedures for timber drying operations

mechanisms to ensure the efficient and effective use of energy

timber drying operation procedures

process cycles and modifications

Procedures for recording and reporting workplace information.
