Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to cut panels to size with a power driven saw. Work is completed in a forest products factory setting and includes operator maintenance.The unit applies to production workers who cut panels in a forest and wood products factory setting and includes operator maintenance.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

The following resources must be made available:

tools and equipment for cutting panels:

measuring equipment

saws which must include one or more of the following:

manually controlled docking and trimming saws

band saws

bench saws

panel saws

saws with adjustable angle

saws with one or multiple blades

table saws

maintenance tools and equipment for saws

consumable saw blades

personal protective equipment suitable for cutting panels

commercial timber which must include one or more of the following:

medium density fibreboard

laminated veneer

chipboard

fibreboard

plywood

continuous ply

manufacturers’ instructions for use and maintenance of equipment

work order for cutting activities with specific instructions for cutting and storing panels

template documents for recording production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements

relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information

organisational procedures for cutting panels.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

Element: Prepare for cutting
  • Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
  • Obtain type and quantity of material to be cut from storage location.
  • Select appropriate personal protective and other equipment and check for operational effectiveness.
  • Plan material cutting patterns and saw set-up sequences in line with work order.
       
Element: Cut material to size or angle
  • Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.
  • Mark up material and set stops in preparation for cutting.
  • Follow cutting sequence and patterns to produce required quantity.
  • Check cuts for length and angle within set tolerances.
  • Dispose of incorrect cuts, off cuts and defective material in line with environmental protection practices.
  • Stack material safely in designated location in line with work order.

  • Follow organisational safety procedures to lock out equipment.
  • Check saw blades for bluntness or damage.
  • Remove and replace saw blades in line with manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Dispose of used blades in line with environmental protection practices.
  • Keep machine clear of dust and debris in line with organisational safety procedures.
  • Record and report production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel.

1. Prepare for cutting

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

produce cut panels in line with an individual work orders that prescribe different lengths and tolerances and number of panels for each job; types of material includes:

medium density fibreboard

laminated veneer

chipboard

fibreboard

plywood

continuous ply

across the above jobs, complete cutting patterns and sequences for single straight cuts and angles requiring one cutting pass set for multiple cuts of the same size

for each of the above jobs, stack batches of cut panels in storage location according to common length and width

after each of the above jobs, complete operator maintenance on the saw used.

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for forest products factory settings:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing timber and other waste

storage layout and categories for:

raw materials

stacking finished panels

typical timber panel defects and how they affect ability to produce quality sawn panels:

warp

cutting patterns and sequences for single straight cuts and angles requiring one cutting pass

range of industry standard lengths, cross sections and tolerances and applicable terminology

purpose, features and operation of equipment used to cut panels:

methods for assessing saw blade condition and completing basic non-specialist repair and maintenance for saws
