Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to use a power driven saw to saw panels to size from a roll of continuous ply.The unit applies to production workers who saw products from continuous ply in a forest and wood products factory setting and includes operator maintenance.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

The following resources must be made available:

tools and equipment for sawing products from continuous ply:

measuring equipment

saws which must include one or more of the following:

power operated, manually controlled docking and trimming saws with carriages

saws with adjustable angle

saws with one or multiple blades

bandsaws

panel saws

table saws

bench saws

feed system with rollers which support continuous ply

maintenance tools and equipment for saws

consumable saw blades

personal protective equipment suitable for sawing products from continuous ply

a diverse range of continuous ply rolls

manufacturers’ instructions for use and maintenance of equipment

work order with specific instructions for sawing and storing panels

template documents for recording production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements

relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information

organisational procedures for sawing products from continuous ply

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

Element: Prepare for cutting
  • Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
  • Select appropriate personal protective and other equipment and check for operational effectiveness.
  • Obtain type and quantity of continuous ply to be cut from storage location.
  • Plan material cutting patterns and saw set-up sequences in line with work order.
       
Element: Cut continuous ply to size
  • Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.
  • Mark material and set stops in preparation for cutting.
  • Set-up ply on in-feed and feed systems, check and regularly adjust rate.
  • Follow cutting sequence and patterns to produce required quantity.
  • Check cuts for length or angle within set tolerance.
  • Dispose of incorrect cuts, off cuts and defective material in line with environmental protection practices.
  • Stack material safely in designated location in line with work order.

  • Follow organisational safety procedures to lock out equipment.
  • Check saw blades for bluntness or damage.
  • Remove and replace saw blades in line with manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Dispose of used blades in line with environmental protection practices.
  • Keep work area clear of dust and debris in line with organisational safety procedures.
  • Record and report production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel.

1. Prepare for cutting

1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.

3.4 Dispose of used blades in line with environmental protection practices.

3.5 Keep work area clear of dust and debris in line with organisational safety procedures.

3.6 Record and report production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel.

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

produce sawn panels from continuous ply in line with individual work orders prescribing different lengths and tolerances and number of panels for each job

across the above jobs, complete cutting patterns and sequences for single straight cuts and angles requiring one cutting pass set for multiple cuts of the same size

for each of the above jobs, stack batches of sawn panels in storage location according to common length

after each of the above jobs, complete operator maintenance on the saw used.

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

disposing of, recycling and reusing timber ply and other waste

typical continuous ply defects and how they affect ability to produce quality sawn panels:

cutting patterns and sequences for single straight cuts and angles requiring one cutting pass

range of industry standard lengths, tolerances and applicable terminology

purpose, features and operation of equipment used to saw products from continuous ply:
