Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to operate a heat driven press system to compress chips, flakes or fibre using the daylight process. The unit applies to production operators and technicians who press material using the daylight process in a forest and wood products factory setting and includes shutting down and cleaning equipment.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

The following resources must be made available:

tools and equipment for pressing material using the daylight process which must include at least one of the following:

daylight process presses driven by steam pressure

pre-presses

formers

forming equipment which must include at least one of the following:

mats

screens

trays

plates

press bars or stops

cooling receivers

blending equipment

trimming equipment

personal protective equipment suitable for pressing material using the daylight process

commercial material to be compressed which must include at least one of the following:

chips

fibre

flakes

manufacturers’ instructions for use and cleaning of equipment

work order with specific instructions for pressing material using the daylight process

template documents for recording production outcomes and equipment faults

relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information

organisational procedures for pressing material using the daylight process

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

Element: Prepare for pressing

  • Assess pressed material and thickness changes regularly and adjust former and press set-up to produce quality formed materials.

  • Load material into cooling receiver, trim check and unload.
  • Test material samples to confirm compliance with industry standards and check for defects.
  • Dispose of sub-standard material in line with environmental protection practices.
  • Transfer finished material for further processing in line with organisational procedures.

  • Coordinate shutdown with other line operators in line with organisational safety procedures.
  • Strip and clean blending, press and handling equipment in line with manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.
  • Check and clean press bars or stops, plates and screens.
  • Keep machine clear of dust and debris in line with organisational safety procedures.
  • Record and report production outcomes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.

3.5 Dispose of sub-standard material in line with environmental protection practices.

3.6 Transfer finished material for further processing in line with organisational procedures.

4. Shut down and clean equipment

4.1 Coordinate shutdown with other line operators in line with organisational safety procedures.

4.2 Strip and clean blending, press and handling equipment in line with manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.

4.3 Check and clean press bars or stops, plates and screens.

4.4 Keep machine clear of dust and debris in line with organisational safety procedures.

4.5 Record and report production outcomes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

assess formed material for moisture content, weight, thickness, density and defects and adjust forming cycle times, pressures and temperatures to produce quality outputs

after each of the above jobs, complete operator maintenance to clean equipment.
