Unit of Competency HLTDET003 - Construct registration rims
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to design and manufacture registration rims for removable prostheses. This unit applies to work in dental technology. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand Standards and industry codes of practice.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Skills must have been demonstrated in a dental laboratory workplace or in a simulated dental laboratory environment that reflects workplace laboratory conditions. The following conditions must be met for this unit:

• use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources including:

- access to work order

- Dental Board of Australia guidelines on infection control on which the candidate bases the planning process

- laboratory safety manuals and procedures in line with relevant Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation

- materials for construction of rims

- WHS policies on which the candidate bases the planning process.

Assessors must satisfy the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements define the essential outcomes

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Select and prepare materials

1.1 Read and interpret the work order

1.2 Select appropriate material for the base

1.3 Select appropriate material for the rim

1.4 Prepare model to enable appropriate application of selected base material

2. Construct base

2.1 Apply selected base material to model

2.2 Process base material according to type of material selected

2.3 Trim base material to peripheral contours of model and appropriate landmarks

3. Construct registration rim

3.1 Construct rim to industry standard in selected material

3.2 Trim rim to prescribed dimensions and appropriate landmarks

3.3 Smooth and polish rim according to material chosen

3.4 Decontaminate the registration rim according to infection control guidelines

3.5 Dry the registration rim and place in a sealed container for dispatch

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

• read and correctly interpreted 4 work orders

• used standard precautions and safe work practices to fabricate maxillary and mandibular registration rims using a range of flexible and rigid base and rim material for the following dentitions (4 rims in total):

- partial with a combination of bounded and unbounded saddle areas

- edentulous

• critically evaluated the 4 registration rims produced to meet technical laboratory and clinician requirements.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

• Australian/New Zealand Standards, workplace health and safety (WHS) policies, Dental Board of Australia guidelines on infection control, Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation and organisation policies relating to dental laboratory work

• fundamental oral anatomy including:

- dentition – arrangement of the teeth, naming and coding of teeth

- structures of the oral cavity – hard and soft palate, lateral and posterior borders of the oral cavity, tongue and floor of the mouth

- teeth form and function

• properties of materials used to construct registration rims, including rigid and flexible bases.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
