Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to maintain infection prevention during skin penetration treatments and to review clinic compliance with the applicable state or territory and local council requirements.It requires the ability to identify, manage and control infection risks to clients, self and work colleagues. This unit applies to individuals who make independent treatment decisions. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions. The following conditions must be met for this unit:

use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including:

clinical and other waste and waste disposal equipment

equipment for cleaning, including sterilised sharps if relevant to role

hand hygiene facilities and equipment

medical or client care equipment relevant to the workplace

organisational infection prevention and control policies and procedures

personal protective equipment

WHS procedures

modelling of industry operating conditions, including integration of problem solving activities to which the candidate responds

Assessors must satisfy the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.

  • Place soiled linen and protective clothing in a suitable receptacle.

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

integrated the maintenance of infection control with skin penetration technical skills that individually or in combination demonstrate:

identification of potential cross contamination risks, protecting self and client from infection risks

choosing and using appropriate cleaning, disinfection and sterilising procedures for instruments, equipment and equipment attachments and work surfaces

use of correct steriliser operation procedures:

provided a written review of workplace compliance with relevant state or territory and local council laws, regulations and requirements for skin penetration treatments.

legal responsibilities in relation to infection control, sterilising, registration or business licensing, conduct of occupation, and maintenance of premises relevant to role

sources of infection and means of transmission

risk management in relation to infection control

procedures and practices that support infection control measures and prevent infection transmission
