Evidence of the following is essential:

set and efficiently operate a machine for sewn fastening according to job specifications and within the production timeframe

demonstrate all safety devices on the machine

set up and run a machine to produce THREE different sewn products

evidence for assessment may be gathered from assessment of the unit of competency alone or through an integrated assessment activity.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure:

assessment may take place on the job, off the job or a combination of both of theses. Off the job assessment must be undertaken in a closely simulated workplace environment

a machine for sewn fastening.

use of technology by setting up and operating fastening equipment

Required knowledge

OHS areas that must be addressed when setting up these areas of the machine

effect of sewing being in the wrong position

the largest/smallest size bag or sack that can be processed on the machine

adapting the machines to facilitate smaller/larger stock

The range statement relates to the unit of competency as a whole. It allows for different work environments and situations that may affect performance. Bold italicised wording, if used in the performance criteria, is detailed below. Essential operating conditions that may be present with training and assessment (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) may also be included.

Types of thread may include:

cotton, oiled cotton, hemp.

Sewing tape may include:

different widths, stretch tape, back taping.

Bagvariables may include:

multi-wall, bags, sacks, waxed, plastic films.

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
