Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to produce basic relief printed product through operation of a platen, cylinder or rotary printing machine.It applies to individuals who generally work under direct supervision and assist in the production process by maintaining equipment, materials and quality standards. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the printing field of work and include access to:

special purpose tools, and materials

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Evidence of the ability to:

produce TWO basic relief printing jobs (if possible, including at least one in-line process) according to manufacturer’s and job specifications and enterprise procedures using either a platen, cylinder or rotary printing machine (jobs should be completed while maintaining product quality standards, and production problems should be rectified with minimum downtime)

correctly shut down machine and clean according to work health and safety (WHS) guidelines

use control, monitoring and data entry systems

manipulate embellishment tools and operations

provide an example of printed material below acceptable standard.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain reel or sheet transportation and delivery systems

explain WHS requirements when loading and handling heavy reel sheets fanned before loading into the press

explain web tracking and importance to position and register

describe consequences of not splicing web correctly

list components to be adjusted to ensure correct delivery

explain effect of excessive suction on the slow-down wheels

identify frequency product quality should be assessed

explain causes of a halo effect on the relief print

identify signs of wear in the image area of the plate marking product deemed unacceptable by operator

identify monitoring systems

explain how to maintain ink levels

explain WHS concerns for in-line components of the press

discuss examination frequency of in-line components

list quality control and problem-solving techniques

describe precautions to ensure rewound product is of consistent, acceptable quality

identify quality assurance processes

describe appropriate actions if mild set-off was found on the back of the print

explain who to consult if there are problems with the print that cannot be fixed by the operator
