Version 1.0
Issue Date: April 2024

Qualification -
Unit of Competency ICPPRP272 - Produce gravure cylinders manually
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manually make gravure cylinders. It requires the individual to manually make gravure cylinders by planning, selecting, exposing and developing the plate, and establishing and maintaining a chemical register. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the Pre-Press field of work and include access to special purpose tools, equipment and industry software packages.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria
Element: Select plate
  • Job specifications are interpreted to determine the appropriate type of cylinder base and/or shell for the job
  • Cylinder and/or shell is selected to deliver outputquality required by the job brief

Element: Pre-plan process
  • Work area is tidied and cleaned to ensure output qualityand a safe worksite
  • Exposure and coating equipment is maintained according to manufacturer’s specifications and safety requirements
  • Exposure is controlled using step wedges and densitometry
  • Cylinder is coated according to manufacturer’s specifications
  • Cylinder is exposed making sure image direction, autotrons and tracker lines are correctly positioned according to job specifications
  • Work health and safety (WHS) requirements are observed when handling chemicals

Element: Expose plate
  • Chemical balance is checked and maintained in developing tank
  • Cylinder is developed according to manufacturer’s specifications, enterprise procedures and safety requirements

Element: Develop plate
  • Etching bath is maintained to correct activity level according to manufacturer’s specifications and enterprise procedures
  • Cylinder is etched according to the job specifications (cell depth)

Element: Finish plate
  • Establish a chemical register to identify and describe purpose of each chemical and ensure finished cylinders meet set specifications
  • All chemicals used in the workplace are identified and registered correctly according to safe working practices

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1 Select plate

1.1 Job specifications are interpreted to determine the appropriate type of cylinder base and/or shell for the job

1.2 Cylinder and/or shell is selected to deliver outputquality required by the job brief

2 Pre-plan process

2.1 Work area is tidied and cleaned to ensure output qualityand a safe worksite

2.2 Exposure and coating equipment is maintained according to manufacturer’s specifications and safety requirements

2.3 Exposure is controlled using step wedges and densitometry

2.4 Cylinder is coated according to manufacturer’s specifications

2.5 Cylinder is exposed making sure image direction, autotrons and tracker lines are correctly positioned according to job specifications

2.6 Work health and safety (WHS) requirements are observed when handling chemicals

3 Expose plate

3.1 Chemical balance is checked and maintained in developing tank

3.2 Cylinder is developed according to manufacturer’s specifications, enterprise procedures and safety requirements

4 Develop plate

4.1 Etching bath is maintained to correct activity level according to manufacturer’s specifications and enterprise procedures

4.2 Cylinder is etched according to the job specifications (cell depth)

5 Finish plate

5.1 Establish a chemical register to identify and describe purpose of each chemical and ensure finished cylinders meet set specifications

5.2 All chemicals used in the workplace are identified and registered correctly according to safe working practices

Evidence of the ability to:

manually produce TWO gravure cylinders and establish and maintain a chemical register according to the listed performance criteria

safely and correctly process the cylinder to ensure etching produces a quality print

find and use information relevant to the task from a variety of information sources.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

state chemical names and symbols for three chemicals used in cylinder production

describe standard safety procedures used when handling gravure chemicals

describe two methods of manual gravure cylinder production

explain cylinder balancing and how it is achieved

outline preparation processes for both steel and aluminium cylinder bases

explain Blue Print and how it is produced

outline Direct Transfer method of cylinder production

explain how cell depth is determined

identify etching solution chemical

state thickness of chrome coating on the etched surface

outline factors that govern rate of etch

list manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to this task, identify where are they kept and what information is included.

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assignment, checklist) and due date here

Assessment task 1: [title]      Due date:

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
