Version 1.0
Issue Date: April 2024

Qualification -
Unit of Competency ICPPRP285 - Scan a mono image
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare line or tone copy, set up a scanner and reproduce the image to meet the technical specifications suitable for print media production. It applies to individuals who prepare images for scanning and set up the scanner to ensure the image output will meet the technical standards required for the specifications of the job and print media requirements.Individuals generally work under supervision and within defined procedures. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the Pre-Press field of work and include access to special purpose tools, equipment and industry software packages.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria
Element: Prepare line and/or tone original for scanning
  • Line or tone image/copy is scaled to conform to production specifications or quality standards
  • Quality of line or tone image input is assessed to determine scanner settings
  • Line or tone image is prepared for mounting to scanner ready for scanning

Element: Prepare scanner
  • Scanner is selected and set correctly for the mono image to be scanned
  • Appropriate softwareis selected for scanning line and/or tone images

Element: Scan image
  • Original image is scanned for reproduction
  • Quality of scanned image is checked against job/design specifications and printing reproduction requirements
  • Appropriate software is applied to scan and process the image
  • Image is checked for compliance with design specifications

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1 Prepare line and/or tone original for scanning

1.1 Line or tone image/copy is scaled to conform to production specifications or quality standards

1.2 Quality of line or tone image input is assessed to determine scanner settings

1.3 Line or tone image is prepared for mounting to scanner ready for scanning

2 Prepare scanner

2.1 Scanner is selected and set correctly for the mono image to be scanned

2.2 Appropriate softwareis selected for scanning line and/or tone images

3 Scan image

3.1 Original image is scanned for reproduction

3.2 Quality of scanned image is checked against job/design specifications and printing reproduction requirements

3.3 Appropriate software is applied to scan and process the image

3.4 Image is checked for compliance with design specifications

Evidence of the ability to:

use flat-bed or drum scanner and reproduce THREE examples of line and tone reproductions with supporting comments on set-up criteria and job specifications

access task-relevant information from a variety of information sources

determine capability of scanner hardware and software to meet reproduction requirements for print media

scan images to meet requirements, ensuring they are transferrable across design, pre-press and print sectors.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

describe characteristics of a line or tone image

describe printing processes and type of substrates used for printing processes

outline work health and safety (WHS) issues associated with scanner/computer operations

determine scanner resolution

explain correct controls for scanner operation

explain hardware and software requirements for line and tone scanning

explain scanners and relevant specifications

outline software requirements and specifications to process and output the image

list sources of information and other documentation related to safety and scanner operation

describe how manuals and documentation are correctly stored

demonstrate correct use of hardware and software

describe how reproduction requirements are matched to resolution factors and job brief.

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assignment, checklist) and due date here

Assessment task 1: [title]      Due date:

(add new lines for each of the assessment tasks)

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

3 Scan image

3.1 Original image is scanned for reproduction

3.2 Quality of scanned image is checked against job/design specifications and printing reproduction requirements

3.3 Appropriate software is applied to scan and process the image

3.4 Image is checked for compliance with design specifications

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
