Scan images for reproduction

Version 1.0
Issue Date: March 2024

Qualification -
Unit of Competency ICPPRP286 - Scan images for reproduction
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to scan line images. It applies to individuals who prepare a line copy or original for scanning, set up the scanner and ensure the quality of the scanned image meets the technical specifications of the job and final media requirements. These individuals work under limited supervision and with defined procedures. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the Pre-Press field of work and include access to special purpose tools, equipment and industry software packages.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria
Element: Prepare line image for scanning
  • Line image for scanning is scaled to conform to production specifications
  • Quality of line image for scanning is assessed to determine scanner settings
  • Line image is cleaned and mounted ready for scanning

Element: Prepare scanner
  • Scanner is set correctly for line images to be scanned
  • Appropriate software is selected for scanning and processing line images
  • Adjustments are made to ensure quality of scanned image

Element: Scan and check image
  • Appropriate software is applied to scan and process line images
  • Original line image is scanned for reproduction according to design specifications
  • Quality of scanned image is checked against job specifications and printing or reproduction requirements

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1 Prepare line image for scanning

1.1 Line image for scanning is scaled to conform to production specifications

1.2 Quality of line image for scanning is assessed to determine scanner settings

1.3 Line image is cleaned and mounted ready for scanning

2 Prepare scanner

2.1 Scanner is set correctly for line images to be scanned

2.2 Appropriate software is selected for scanning and processing line images

2.3 Adjustments are made to ensure quality of scanned image

3 Scan and check image

3.1 Appropriate software is applied to scan and process line images

3.2 Original line image is scanned for reproduction according to design specifications

3.3 Quality of scanned image is checked against job specifications and printing or reproduction requirements

Evidence of the ability to:

use desktop flat-bed scanner and reproduce THREE line originals, ensuring quality of scanned image meets specified quality standards and final media requirements

locate and use task-relevant information from a variety of information sources

ensure underlying skill of scanning images are transferable across design and pre-press sectors

identify substrate for reproduction and ensure quality of scanned image is suitable for the identified printing processes.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

describe relevant printing processes and electronic media

identify scanning requirements

describe characteristics of a line original

outline factors that determine line scanning resolution

name controls that exist within the software for line scanning

name essential hardware specifications and software requirements for line scanning

outline specific software requirements to process and output the image

outline work health and safety (WHS) concerns of operating a scanner and standards that relate to working for periods of time on computers

list manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to this task, and identify where are they kept and what information is included in these documents.

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assignment, checklist) and due date here

Assessment task 1: [title]      Due date:

(add new lines for each of the assessment tasks)

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

3.2 Original line image is scanned for reproduction according to design specifications

3.3 Quality of scanned image is checked against job specifications and printing or reproduction requirements

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
