Develop a digital data template

Version 1.0
Issue Date: March 2024

Qualification -
Unit of Competency ICPPRP485 - Develop a digital data template
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to document content and structure for digital print equipment. It requires the individual to identify data requirements, content and structure of a digital template for variable digital printing. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the Pre-Press field of work and include access to special purpose tools, equipment and industry software packages.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria
Element: Identify content requirements
  • Data purpose is identified from job requirements and clarified with client
  • Data file format and type of database are identified
  • Layout is determined from job requirements and confirmed with client
  • Static and variable areas are identified according to job specifications
  • Accuracy of data is confirmed and signed off as such by client
  • Requirement for additional software integration is determined, such as postal software

Element: Develop template
  • Fields are created and named consistently to reduce errors
  • Copy holes and data are marked-up to match job specifications
  • Report for the printer is developed which identifies relevant data assigned to each copy hole according to job specifications and business rules
  • Copy holes are assigned and related information documented for printer to understand the connection to the data
  • Correct number of fields is available for the job
  • Template is signed off as suitable by client

Element: Finalise and test template
  • Business rules are tested and if possible a soft proof is reviewed
  • Final document is viewed with a markup language parser
  • Spot colours are converted to process colours where necessary
  • Template is well-formed, error-free and meets client needs
  • Template is extensible to meet future client needs
  • Template is finalised and made ready to send to the press

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1 Identify content requirements

1.1 Data purpose is identified from job requirements and clarified with client

1.2 Data file format and type of database are identified

1.3 Layout is determined from job requirements and confirmed with client

1.4 Static and variable areas are identified according to job specifications

1.5 Accuracy of data is confirmed and signed off as such by client

1.6 Requirement for additional software integration is determined, such as postal software

2 Develop template

2.1 Fields are created and named consistently to reduce errors

2.2 Copy holes and data are marked-up to match job specifications

2.3 Report for the printer is developed which identifies relevant data assigned to each copy hole according to job specifications and business rules

2.4 Copy holes are assigned and related information documented for printer to understand the connection to the data

2.5 Correct number of fields is available for the job

2.6 Template is signed off as suitable by client

3 Finalise and test template

3.1 Business rules are tested and if possible a soft proof is reviewed

3.2 Final document is viewed with a markup language parser

3.3 Spot colours are converted to process colours where necessary

3.4 Template is well-formed, error-free and meets client needs

3.5 Template is extensible to meet future client needs

3.6 Template is finalised and made ready to send to the press

Evidence of the ability to:

identify correct data requirements and develop and mark up the structure of a digital template for variable digital printing that is error-free in the soft proof and meets client requirements, job specifications and performance criteria

find and use information relevant to the task from a variety of information sources.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain Standard Generalised Markup Language (SGML) and why it is important

explain the relationship of SGML to Extensible Markup Language (XML) and Personalised Print Markup Language (PPML)

outline the difference between SGML, PPML and XML and the use of SGML
over XML

outline the difference between Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and Extensible Stylesheet Language XSL

state the intended purpose of XSL

identify ways an extensible markup language can be used over HyperText Markup Language (HTML), and ways to use both with one set of data

outline purposes of meta data within markup language documents

explain why PRISM is important for content publishing

explain the PPML relationship to XML.

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assignment, checklist) and due date here

Assessment task 1: [title]      Due date:

(add new lines for each of the assessment tasks)

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
