Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare a site for support installation for aerial or underground cable, or for erection of radio towers or above ground or underground equipment enclosures.It applies to individuals who can apply a broad range of competencies in a varied work context from installation to operation of telecommunications equipment and products.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the telecommunications – project management field of work and include access to:

sites on which installations can be performed

equipment and personal protective equipment

relevant regulatory, organisational and equipment documentation.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Element: Prepare for installation
  • Confirm location of proposed installation is according to installation plan and relevant legislation, codes, regulations and standards
  • Recognise and report hazards
  • Obtain approvals and authorisations for work, and carry at all times during works
  • Inform landowner or tenant of imminent works
  • Locate adjoining services according to enterprise guidelines and work health and safety (WHS) practices
  • Clear site of vegetation and debris according to work specifications and any relevant approvals

  • Place pegs for proposed installation according to enterprise guidelines and site plans
  • Excavate using appropriate equipment for size of excavation and location of works, according to enterprise guidelines
  • Conduct levelling of site within tolerance specified in installation plan
  • Employ WHS practices and personal protective equipment, where appropriate, in manner intended by manufacturer

  • Note approved alterations on original plan and design using appropriate symbols, and return plan to originator
  • Complete and sign reports according to enterprise policy where required
  • Inform landowner or tenant of construction completion and expected next steps according to enterprise guidelines

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

identify construction methods and performance requirements

outline the features and operating requirements of construction equipment

identify legislation, codes of practice and other formal agreements that impact on the work activity

identify manufacturer requirements for safe operation of equipment

identify specific work health and safety (WHS) requirements relating to the activity and site conditions

describe the levelling and measuring procedures for marking out an excavation

identify and describe the operation of tools and equipment suitable for site preparation and excavation

explain typical issues and challenges that occur on site

discuss the communications strategies required when dealing with landowners and tenants.
