Description This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to operate forklifts in specific work areas such as freezers, cold stores, loadout, skin sheds, smallgoods and rendering plants which may require fitting forklifts with specialised lifting attachments or shifting hazardous materials.
Employability Skills This unit contains employability skills.
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit is applicable to workers in meat processing plants and smallgoods enterprises operating forklifts in environments where specific competencies are required. Prior to undertaking this unit, individuals should have gained the necessary licence or permit to operate a forklift.

Element: Identify load characteristics
  • Characteristics of the load are taken into account and appropriate attachments are employed.
  • Hazardous materials are identified and workplace, industry and regulatory requirements are taken into account when operating a forklift carrying hazardous materials.

  • Product is transported and loaded, taking into consideration specific features of the workplace environment.

Overview of assessment

The meat industry has specific and clear requirements for evidence. A minimum of three forms of evidence is required to demonstrate competency in the meat industry. This is specifically designed to provide evidence that covers the demonstration in the workplace of all aspects of competency over time.

These requirements are in addition to the requirements for valid, current, authentic and sufficient evidence.

Three forms of evidence means three different kinds of evidence - not three pieces of the same kind. In practice it will mean that most of the unit is covered twice. This increases the legitimacy of the evidence.

All assessment must be conducted against Australian meat industry standards and regulations.

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Competency must be demonstrated in specific meat processing plant environments such as freezers and under normal operating conditions.

Context of, and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must be conducted in an operating meat processing plant and assessment tools must be customised to the workplace-specific OH&S procedures and work instructions.

Method of assessment

Recommended methods of assessment include:

quiz of underpinning knowledge

workplace demonstration

workplace referee or third-party report of performance over time.

Assessment practices should take into account any relevant language or cultural issues related to Aboriginality or Torres Strait Islander, gender, or language backgrounds other than English. Language and literacy demands of the assessment task should not be higher than those of the work role.
