NWPIRR031 Mapping and Delivery Guide
Monitor and control drainage operations

Version 1.0
Issue Date: April 2024

Qualification -
Unit of Competency NWPIRR031 - Monitor and control drainage operations
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills required to monitor, operate and control drainage systems. The ability to identify faults, gather data, interpret technical information and operate technical equipment is essential to performance. This unit applies to those working as field staff with a responsibility for inspecting and reporting faults in drainage systems and for operating, integrating and regulating drainage system processes. The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to, particularly those related to WHS.Those undertaking this unit would work under indirect supervision, while performing routine tasks ensuring minimum damage to the environment, in a familiar context. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Competency should be assessed in an actual workplace or in a simulated environment, with access to equipment and infrastructure appropriate to the outcome. Competency should be demonstrated over time to ensure the candidate is assessed across a variety of situations.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

ELEMENTS

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions section.

1. Inspect drainage systems

1.1 Schedule and conduct routine inspections of drainage systems.

1.2 Monitor faults and take remedial action.

1.3 Collect and report data on drainage system performance and usage.

2. Monitor flows

2.1 Monitor flows entering drains.

2.2 Monitor flows in drains to ensure correct drain operation.

2.3 Complete remedial action.

3. Control and operate processes

3.1 Control processes to maintain parameters of operation.

3.2 Identify, address and report problems and operational conditions of the drainage network.

3.3 Integrate processes to improve drainage network performance.

3.4 Compile process records.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the candidate must demonstrate evidence of performance of the following on at least one occasion.

interpreting plans, topographic drawings, charts, service diagrams, service search diagrams, instructions, policies and procedures

monitoring, operating and controlling drainage systems

monitoring fault reports

scheduling and conducting inspections

collecting performance and usage data

inspecting and adjusting flow regulating systems

monitoring discharge flows

controlling and integrating processes

identifying and addressing problems

completing required documentation

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the depth of knowledge demonstrated must be appropriate to the job context of the candidate.

inspection of drainage systems

coordination processes

system layout and processes

environmental aspects of drainage systems

policies and standard operating procedures

relevant utilities and service bodies

risk factors and potential hazards involved in drainage systems

equipment operation, capacity and limitations

effects of weather and conditions on operation of drainage systems

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
