Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to identify and rectify workplace problems in a pulp or paper manufacturing facility. This work typically involves complex integrated equipment and continuous operations.This unit applies to production support operators and technicians who identify and analyse causes of problems, apply solutions on a priority basis and document these activities.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

The following resources must be made available

access is to a full range of equipment relevant to identifying and rectifying problems in a pulp or paper manufacturing facility, including workplace procedures and associated documents

personal protective equipment required to be worn when working in a pulp and paper manufacturing facility

standard operating and fault finding documentation

communication equipment and two-way radios

recording/reporting proformas

relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or in a productive environment that accurately reflects performance in a workplace.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, and must be able to provide evidence that they can:

apply problem solving skills and knowledge on the job, including identifying and rectifying problems, for at least two of the following operations:

handling and preparing primary resources

coating systems

steam generation

electrical power generation

handling and preparing waste paper for pulp production

waste paper operations

pulping operations

chemical recovery operations

finishing and converting

stock preparation operations

wet end operations

dry end operations

water services

identify process, quality and equipment faults/problems, at least twice in line with required enterprise intervals, during the production process

identify indicators, causes and effects of faults

take timely corrective action to maximise safety, quality and productivity

use standard procedural steps to identify and rectify problems

use equipment control systems to check and adjust processes.

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

system operations, processes and associated services, including the following:

plant layout

principles of operation

causes and effects of adjustments made to equipment and processes

fault indications

relationships between system, processes and associated services

effects of process variables on production and quality

sampling and testing for plant and system operations and process monitoring

site-specific WHS, requirements/practices, SOPs, isolation procedures, safe working requirements, risks and hazard identification and housekeeping

electronic and other control systems, operation and application to make appropriate adjustments.
