Description This unit covers the competency required to participate as a member of a team in community safety activities, working with the community on matters related to fire and other hazards, presenting agency approved community safety information and contributing to hazard mitigation activities. Community safety activities provide an important opportunity to build community capacity in relation to prevention, preparedness and response to a fire or other event.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Employability Skills This unit contains employability skills.
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit applies to personnel required to participate as a member of a team in a variety of activities to build community capacity in relation to prevention, preparedness and response to a fire or other event.Work at this level is undertaken under direct supervision and instruction.Examples of typical community safety activities that a person at this level may contribute to as a part of a team include: school programs; information and open days at fire stations; festivals; expos and community events; fire safety presentations; and demonstrations to individual groups and community meetings.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Element: Participate in the identification of specific hazards
  • Inspections are undertaken to identify specific hazards as directed
  • Individuals are consulted during the identification process in accordance with the organisation's procedures
  • Outcomes of identification process are reported to the supervisor
       
Element: Participate in presenting community safety information
  • Community safety information is collected and prepared in accordance with the organisation's requirements
  • Community safety information is distributed to the relevant target groups as instructed
  • Location for presentation is identified and relevant preparations for the event are undertaken as directed
  • Feedback received from the participants is reported to the supervisor in a timely manner
       
Element: Participate in risk mitigation activities
  • Appropriate risk mitigation procedures, work instructions and directions are followed in accordance with the organisation's procedures
  • Work is undertaken in accordance with occupational health and safety procedures
  • Mitigation activities are undertaken with minimum damage to the environment in accordance with organisational procedures and legislation
  • Outcomes are reported to the supervisor

Method of assessment

In a public safety environment assessment is usually conducted via direct observation in a training environment or in the workplace via subject matter supervision and/or mentoring, which is typically recorded in a competency workbook.

Assessment is completed using appropriately qualified assessors who select the most appropriate method of assessment.

Assessment may occur in an operational environment or in an agency-approved simulated work environment. Forms of assessment that are typically used include:

direct observation

interviewing the candidate

journals and workplace documentation

third party reports from supervisors

written or oral questions

Assessment Tasks
