Description This unit covers the performance of intermediate rigging operations in the resources and infrastructure industries. It includes planning for rigging, preparing for rigging, moving loads and cleaning up. The work required in this unit relates to the National Standard for High Risk Work. Element: Plan for rigging
  • Access, interpret and apply compliance documentation relevant to the work activity
  • Obtain, interpret and clarify work requirements before commencing
  • Develop a preliminary rigging plan and site sketch taking account of essential information
  • Follow safety information including signage/barricade requirements
  • Check and confirm job feasibility and schedule with the client, the load designer and other persons as appropriate
  • Identify and apply any environmental protection requirements
  • Finalise and confirm rigging plan including the scheduling of required resources
       
Element: Prepare for rigging
  • Identify, select, inspect, assemble and confirm as serviceable rigging equipment, materials and tools required for the plan
  • Label for repair or destroy unserviceable equipment, materials and tools
  • Where appropriate, install fall arrest equipment with ground level installation
  • Determine and select personal cartage systems
       
Element: Move loads
  • Calculate and confirm appropriate safe working loads and centre of gravity using load charts and standard calculation rules prior to load moving
  • Perform load moving in accordance with the plan and acceptable safe work practices
  • Perform work safely at heights, within incomplete structures and/or in confined and enclosed spaces
  • Connect lifting gear to load to Australian standards and manufacturer's specifications
  • Connect load to movement device using appropriate and certified equipment
  • Ensure stability of the load by application of load movement procedure, temporary bracing and/or load support appropriate to the task
  • Safely move load to required destination and secure in position
  • Follow appropriate designer's specifications during the placement and securing of the load
  • Dismantle and remove/restore load shifting equipment
       
Element: Clean up
  • Clear work area and dispose, reuse or recycle materials
  • Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment
  • Apply work completion procedures and notify relevant personnel that work is finished

The evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit must be relevant to worksite operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria, required skills and knowledge and the range statement of this unit and include evidence of the following:

implementation of requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient performance of intermediate rigging operations

working with others to undertake and complete the performance of intermediate rigging operations that meet all of the required outcomes

consistent timely completion of the performance of intermediate rigging operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meet the required outcomes

Context of and specific resources for assessment

This unit must be assessed in the context of the work environment. Where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment may occur in a simulated environment provided it is realistic and sufficiently rigorous to cover all aspects of workplace performance, including task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.

Assessment of this competency requires typical resources normally used in a resources and infrastructure sector environment. Selection and use of resources for particular worksites may differ due to the site circumstances.

The assessment environment should not disadvantage the participant. For example, language, literacy and numeracy demands of assessment should not be greater than those required on the job.

Customisation of assessment and delivery environment should sensitively accommodate cultural diversity.

Aboriginal people and other people from a non English speaking background may have second language issues

Where applicable, physical resources should include equipment modified for people with disabilities. Access must be provided to appropriate learning and/or assessment support when required.

Method of assessment

This unit may be assessed in a holistic way with other units of competency. The assessment strategy for this unit must verify required knowledge and skill and practical application using more than one of the following assessment methods:
