Description This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to interpret plans and client specifications and undertake basic architectural drafting to produce working drawings for retail and exhibition design spaces.
Employability Skills The required outcomes described in this unit contain applicable facets of employability skills. The Employability Skills Summary of the qualification in which this unit is packaged will assist in identifying employability skills requirements.
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit requires the team member to demonstrate knowledge of and apply architectural drafting techniques to develop working drawings for store design, floor layouts exhibition designs and proposals in response to client briefs. Frontline visual merchandisers and visual merchandiser supervisors and managers are responsible for this role.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Produce industry standard page layouts.
  • Establish the purpose and scope of the drawings.
  • Use and maintain manual drafting equipment and materials according to industry standards.
  • Select and use appropriate drawing instruments.
  • Ensure pencil drafts reflect accurate lines of standard widths to delineate object and projection lines.
  • Apply line work in a range of different types and media according to standard industry drawing practice.
  • Form hand letter text in a variety of formats and according to architectural conventions.
  • Identify and use different drawing scales.
  • Incorporate appropriate graphic symbols.
  • Add notations and dimensions to complete drawing.
       
Element: Produce dimensional scale orthographic drawings.
  • Draft accurate layout, dimension and scale of orthographic projections of given objects.
  • Produce orthographic projections to industry standard.
       
Element: Produce scale dimensional drawings of retail objects and interiors.
  • Maintain accurate angles and proportions in isometric and axonometric projections according to orthographic drawings.
  • Maintained correct dimensions in all scale drawings.
       
Element: Produce design solutions in response to client briefs.
  • Describe object, space, scale and accurate dimensions in selected orthographic views.
  • Identify and produce appropriate projections to fulfil client briefs.
  • Complete rendered illustrations using axonometric or isometric projections according to client specifications.

Methods of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

observation of performance in the workplace

review of working drawings

simulated client briefs

third-party reports from a supervisor

client feedback

answers to questions about specific skills and knowledge

review of portfolios of evidence and third-party workplace reports of on-the-job performance.

Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended.

Assessing employability skills

Employability skills are integral to effective performance in the workplace and are broadly consistent across industry sectors. How these skills are applied varies between occupations and qualifications due to the different work functions and contexts.

Assessment Tasks

Purpose and scope of the drawings may include:
