Description This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to design and construct multi-purpose props and merchandisers suitable for retail windows, and in store and exhibition spaces.

Learning Outcomes and Application This unit requires the team member to interpret specifications to design and construct three-dimensional props and merchandisers, maintain and modify fashion mannequins and use a range of props and merchandisers to design and construct displays in retail windows, and store and exhibition spaces.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Design and construct three-dimensional props and merchandisers.
  • Produce canvas backdrops with applied images or collage to client specifications or for use in specific window displays.
  • Produce three-dimensional props and merchandisers to reflect specified promotional and cultural themes or product categories used in displays.
  • Safely construct full-size fashion merchandisers to relevant standards, performance benchmarks and specifications for use in display windows.
  • Design and construct point-of-sale units and ticket holders to suit specific products.
  • Construct slat wall fittings to suit a corporate identity or sign.
  • Design and construct props to suit any given window or exhibition theme.

  • Assess ex-storage mannequins to ascertain maintenance requirements.
  • Recycle mannequins in whole or part using a variety of methods to create new mannequins.
  • Update mannequins to service window themes.

maintenance and modification of store mannequins for a range of display applications.

Methods of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

observation of performance in the workplace

project-based assessment in a simulated display environment

third-party reports from a supervisor

customer feedback

answers to questions about specific skills and knowledge

review of portfolios of evidence and third-party workplace reports of on-the-job performance.

Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended.
