Description This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to differentiate between the different types of tackle outfits in order to select, use and maintain the outfit that is most appropriate to the location and fish species.No licensing, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.
Employability Skills This unit contains employability skills.
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit applies to those working as guides in controlled fishing environments across the recreational fishing industry. This may include those working as fishing tour guides, sports fishermen, retail tackle shop assistants or those working as guides in fishing programs.This unit may also apply to outdoor recreation leaders working for outdoor education or adventure providers; volunteer groups; not-for-profit organisations or government agencies.

  • Select rod suitable to the function, location, habitat and target fish species.
  • Select reel according to the rod and style of fishing.
  • Select line according to the rod, reel and type of fishing.
       
Element: Balance outfit
  • Identify the benefits of matching rod, reel and terminal tackle.
  • Balance rod to reel and match line class to rod and reel, according to the requirements for line selection, relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
  • Select additional equipment that may be required to complete tackle balancing and apply correct use for a specific type of outfit.

  • Apply safety procedures to ensure safety of self and others prior to casting according to relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.

  • Determine fly casting techniques and situations where each technique is used.

Assessment must ensure participation in multiple casting activities using fishing tackle outfits that reflect local conditions to demonstrate competency and consistency of performance.

Assessment must also ensure access to:

suitable locations to select, use and maintain fishing tackle outfits

a variety of fishing tackle outfit equipment suitable for use in a particular type of recreational fishing for a specific habitat.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

observation of safe participation and demonstration of selecting, using and maintaining fishing tackle outfits suitable to a particular species of fish and location

observation of balancing outfits according to the rod, reel and line being used, and of safe casting techniques

oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of relevant legislation, organisational policies and procedures, different types of tackle outfits, and factors affecting outfit selection

third-party reports from a supervisor detailing performance.
