Description This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to conduct cleaning operations in enclosed spaces, including identifying cleaning risks, planning cleaning operations, and cleaning the required enclosed space in accordance with operational requirements.
Employability Skills The required outcomes described in this unit of competency contain applicable facets of Employability Skills. The Employability Skills Summary of the qualification in which this competency is packaged will assist in identifying employability skill requirements.
Learning Outcomes and Application Work must be carried out in accordance with regulations and procedures for conducting cleaning operations in enclosed spaces.Work is performed under some supervision generally within a team environment. It involves the application of established safety procedures and regulatory requirements to the conduct of cleaning operations in enclosed spaces.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Element: Identify risks and plan operation
  • Requirements for the cleaning operation are assessed
  • Potential risks or hazards to self, the environment or others are identified
  • Relevant information including workplace procedures and safety codes are identified and read
  • Cleaning and personal protective equipment and consumables are identified
  • Requirements are assembled in accordance with national standards, safety codes and workplace procedures
  • Work is planned identifying critical parameters of the work
       
Element: Clean required enclosed space
  • Unauthorised persons are removed from the work area
  • Engineering and personal safety equipment is used
  • Unwanted labels are removed
  • Cleaning products, where used, are mixed in accordance with manufacturers and workplace instructions
  • Containers are swept out and washed so that mud, grime and any residue from products stored in the containers are removed
  • Security of chemicals and equipment is maintained
  • Run-off is contained and wastes are disposed of in accordance with local laws and workplace procedures
  • Relevant documentation is completed
  • Equipment used for the process is checked and stored
  • Worksite is checked and returned to operational status

Method of assessment

Assessment of this unit must be undertaken by a registered training organisation

As a minimum, assessment of knowledge must be conducted through appropriate written/oral tests

through appropriately simulated activities at the registered training organisation, and/or

in an appropriate range of situations in the workplace

Required skills:

Communicate effectively with others when conducting cleaning procedures in enclosed spaces

Read and interpret instructions, procedures, information and signs relevant to cleaning procedures in enclosed spaces

Identify container and goods coding, ADG and IMDG markings and where applicable emergency information panels

Interpret and follow operational instructions and prioritise work

Complete documentation related to cleaning procedures in enclosed spaces

Operate electronic communication equipment to required protocol
