Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices


Application

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to participate in environmentally sustainable work practices. The unit requires the ability to identify current resource usage in the workplace and contribute to ensuring compliance with legislative requirements. It also requires the capacity to contribute to improvements in sustainable work practices.

The unit supports the work of Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) assessors and home sustainability assessors. It applies to individuals working in teams with defined roles and responsibilities.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of endorsement.

Identify current resource use in own workplace.

1.1.

Environment and resource efficiency issues impacting on organisation are identified.

1.2.

Resources used in own work role are identified.

1.3.

Current use of resources is measured and documented.

1.4.

Workplace environmental hazards are identified and reported to supervisor.

2.

Comply with environmental regulations during work activities.

2.1.

Procedures are followed to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

2.2.

Breaches or potential breaches of environmental regulations are reported.

3.

Contribute to improving resource efficiency in own work area.

3.1.

Organisation’s plans to improve environmental practices and resource efficiency are identified and followed.

3.2.

Suggestions are made for improvements to workplace environmental practices and resource use in own work area.

4.

Communicate information on resource efficiency issues and practices.

4.1.

Organisational policies and procedures regarding environment and resource efficiency issues are identified and communicated succinctly.

4.2.

Opportunities for improved and sustainable use of resources are identified and communicated as appropriate to customers, colleagues and workplace supervisors.

4.3.

Benefits provided by organisation’s approach to sustainable resource use and impact on work being performed are identified and communicated clearly and succinctly.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.

The person must also demonstrate:

two instances of following workplace environmental procedures in performing tasks associated with own work role

one instance of participating in workplace activities associated with improving environmental and resource efficient work practices at own level of responsibility.

In doing the above, the person must:

communicate with customers and other stakeholders

identify environmental hazards and risks, and resource inefficiencies; and opportunities for improving environmental and resource efficiency identified in the workplace

measure and report current resource use.


Evidence of Knowledge

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:

procedures for identifying environmental and resource hazards, risks and inefficiencies associated with own work practices and own workplace

legislation and regulations that apply to environmentally sustainable practices in own workplace

relevant environmental and resource efficiency systems and procedures for own work area

sustainability principles relating to own work role

workplace reporting procedures.


Assessment Conditions

The following must be present and available to learners during assessment activities:

equipment:

tools and equipment required to perform tasks associated with own work role

materials:

materials required to perform tasks associated with own work role

codes, standards and regulations relating to sustainable work practices

workplace policies and procedures on sustainability and efficient resource use

relationships with team members and supervisor:

assessment activities are performed in a team context under routine supervision.

Assessor requirements

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) current at the time of assessment.
