Establish maintenance plans for swimming pools and spas


Application

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to establish maintenance plans for swimming pools and spas. It includes determining maintenance requirements, developing a maintenance plan, implementing the plan, and then reviewing it.

The unit supports the work of those engaged in installing, servicing and repairing domestic, commercial and public swimming pools and spas. It applies to swimming pool and spa technicians who undertake preventative, routine and seasonal maintenance.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of endorsement.

Determine maintenance requirements.

1.1.

Information is obtained and analysed to establish swimming pool or spamaintenance requirements.

1.2.

Industry benchmarks are reviewed to determine maintenance intervals and other requirements.

1.3.

Workplace health and safety (WHS) and other relevant regulatory requirements are interpreted and incorporated into maintenance requirements.

Develop swimming pool or spa maintenance plan.

2.1.

Maintenance plan is established.

2.2.

Maintenance costs are established.

2.3.

Contract specifications for maintenance services are developed, where appropriate.

2.4.

Safety and security requirements are incorporated into maintenance plan.

2.5.

Criteria are established for selecting tradespeople and other specialist service providers to support maintenance activities.

Register of tradespeople and other specialist service providers is compiled and maintained.

2.7.

Maintenance schedule is established.

2.8.

Systems for recording and implementing maintenance requirements and reporting to client are established.

Implement maintenance plan.

3.1.

Maintenance plan, including fees, is presented to client.

3.2.

Agreed maintenance plan is implemented.

3.3.

Information is provided to client on compliance of swimming pool or spa and environs with safety legislation.

Review maintenance plan.

4.1.

Maintenance plan is assessed.

4.2.

Outcomes of assessment are presented to client.

4.3.

Recommendations for improvement to maintenance plan are presented to and agreed with client.

4.4.

Maintenance plan reflecting identified improvements is prepared.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.

The person must also:

develop a maintenance plan for one swimming pool and one spa that includes procedures for selecting maintenance contractors and maintaining safety and security of clients

implement a maintenance plan for one swimming pool and one spa

review a maintenance plan for one swimming pool and one spa.

In doing the above, the person must:

determine client requirements for the maintenance plan for the above swimming pools and spas

determine maintenance requirements for the above swimming pools and spas.

Assessment Conditions

The following must be present and available to learners during assessment activities:

equipment:

computer with access to internet and printer for researching swimming pool or spa maintenance requirements

materials:

data on swimming pool and spa usage to inform maintenance planning

chemicals and other materials required to maintain a swimming pool or spa

technical manual for swimming pools, spas and associated systems

physical conditions:

assessment activities are performed in the context of maintaining a domestic, commercial or public swimming pool and spa.

Assessment activities are performed on an individual basis under general supervision.

Assessor requirements

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) current at the time of assessment.
