This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to prepare to work in the waste management industry. The unit covers identifying industry organisations and information to identify legal compliance and industry procedures relating to waste management. It also covers identifying future career opportunities, key industry sectors and occupations.
The unit supports those who work under supervision in a waste management team.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of endorsement.

Evidence of Performance
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.
The person must also prepare for work in the waste management industry by identifying and verbally summarising the following operational requirements:
waste management organisations and industry information, including:
compliance requirements, as specified in the range of conditions
industry procedures, as specified in the range of conditions
future career opportunities in the waste management industry based on a basic assessment of key industry sectors and occupations.
Evidence of Knowledge
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:
classifications of dangerous goods
key organisations, occupations and career opportunities in the waste management industry
organisational procedures for working safely, and regulatory and legal requirements relating to the waste management industry
rights and responsibilities of employees and employers
waste contaminants, including:
infestation
mixing of waste types
rot or mould
waterlogging
waste disposal and recovery routes
waste management hierarchy and how it is applied
waste types, as specified in the range of conditions.
Assessment Conditions
The following must be present and available to learners during assessment activities:
equipment:
personal protective equipment (PPE), as specified by organisational requirements
relevant organisational job statements
Timeframe:
as specified by organisational requirements.
Assessor requirements
As a minimum, assessors must satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) current at the time of assessment.
