Prepare work areas for waste sorting

Application

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to prepare the work area for waste sorting. It covers organising plant, equipment and materials required for sorting activities, as well as identifying and reporting hazards in the work area. The unit requires the ability to identify non-conforming waste streams.

The unit supports those who work under supervision in a waste management team.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of endorsement.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1.

Prepare to sort waste.

1.1.

Task sheet is reviewed to identify waste recovery requirements and waste sorting site.

1.2.

Plant, equipment and materials for safe and efficient waste sorting are selected and obtained according to task requirements.

1.3.

Personal protective equipment (PPE)is selected, checked and used according to organisational and compliance requirements.

1.4.

Potential hazards and risks are identified and controlled, or reported to relevant personnel according to organisational and compliance requirements.

2.

Identify waste to be sorted.

2.1.

Waste types are identified for sorting and absence of non-conforming waste streams is confirmed, or problems are reported according to organisational requirements.

2.2.

Sorting site is set up to ensure safe and efficient waste sorting according to organisational and compliance requirements.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.

The person must also prepare three work areas for waste sorting.

While preparing above work areas for waste sorting, the person must:

read and interpret work sheets to identify waste recovery tasks and site requirements

follow organisational procedures and comply with regulatory and legal requirements to:

protect the environment

select, check and use personal protective equipment (PPE)

identify and report hazards and risks in the work area

record and report waste details using organisational proformas

work safely with hazardous substances and dangerous goods

identify waste types to be processed including non-conforming waste

select and obtain the required plant, equipment and materials for waste sorting.

Evidence of Knowledge

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:

classifications of dangerous goods

hazards and risks associated with waste sorting including those related to hazardous substances and dangerous goods

organisational policies and procedures relating to:

Assessment Conditions

The following must be present and available to learners during assessment activities:

equipment:

PPE, as specified by organisational requirements
