Contribute to workplace safety in waste management


Application

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to assist in ensuring own safety and that of others in a waste management workplace. The unit covers sharing work health and safety (WHS) information including legal compliance requirements, encouraging members of the work team to participate in managing WHS, and working with team members to identify and report hazards and control risks.

The unit supports those who work under limited supervision in a waste management team.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of endorsement.

Share WHS information.

1.1.

WHS compliance requirements are identified and discussed with relevant personnel.

1.2.

WHS information to support work tasks is provided to relevant personnel according to organisational and compliance requirements.

Emergency and personal protective equipment (PPE) is selected, checked and used according to organisational and compliance requirements.

Encourage participative arrangements to manage WHS.

2.1.

WHS issues raised by work team are reported to relevant personnel according to organisational requirements.

2.2.

Opportunities to participate in WHS management are encouraged within scope of own role and responsibilities according to organisational and compliance requirements.

3.

Contribute to hazard and risk identification and control.

3.1.

Work team contributions to identifying hazards and assessing risks are encouraged according to organisational requirements.

3.2.

Procedures to control risks and contribute to compliance monitoring are discussed with team members according to organisational requirements.

3.3.

Waste emergency response procedures are followed within scope of own role and responsibilities according to organisational and compliance requirements.

3.4.

Identified hazards are recorded and reported according to organisational and compliance requirements.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.

The person must also contribute to workplace safety in waste management by:

working within WHS compliance requirements in waste management, as specified in the range of conditions

selecting, checking and using emergency and personal protective equipment (PPE)

raising and discussing WHS issues with relevant personnel

identifying hazards and controlling risks posed by those hazards

identifying inadequacies of existing risk control measures

following waste emergency response procedures within the scope of individual roles and responsibilities.


Evidence of Knowledge

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:

compliance requirements for WHS in waste management, as specified in the range of conditions

emergency response procedures for waste management sites, including:

containing and isolating emergencies

site safety plan and methods for locating:

alarms

emergency equipment

communications equipment

clean-up procedures

safe working practices in waste management, including looking for overhead wires when entering, working in, and leaving a work site

types of identification signage used for regulated waste including hazardous class, HAZCHEM codes and classifications of dangerous goods

types of waste management emergencies, including:

chemical reaction

contamination

fire

gas leak

waste spill

contact with live electricity including powerlines

waste types, including:

solid: non-hazardous

liquid: non-hazardous

hazardous: regulated, prescribed, dangerous goods, quarantined, medical and clinical

recoverable resources.


Assessment Conditions

The following must be present and available to learners during assessment activities:

equipment:

emergency and personal protective equipment (PPE), as specified by organisational requirements

relationships with team members and supervisor:

working under limited supervision.

Timeframe:

as specified by organisational requirements.

Assessor requirements

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) current at the time of assessment.

WHS compliance requirements must include:

Relevant personnel must include at least two of the following:
