Application
This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to implement waste management plans. The unit covers interpreting waste management plans to identify implementation tasks, equipment, personnel and compliance requirements. The unit also covers monitoring and improving waste management procedures, and training personnel to ensure their understanding of, and commitment to, the waste management plan. The unit requires reviewing waste management plans to identify and incorporate necessary improvements, and documenting implementation activities.
The unit supports those who work in lead roles in a waste management team.

Evidence of Performance
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.
The person must also implement two different waste management plans, and for each, monitoring:
objectives relating to at least two of the following:
changes to process and procedures
environmental issues
education and training
past and future reviews and audits
recycling requirements
waste reduction
targets relating to at least two of the following:
carbon emissions reduction
lean management
recycling rates
waste minimisation.
While implementing above waste management plans, the person must:
consult with relevant personnel to identify work activities, and to explain waste management procedures
deliver education and training to relevant personnel to ensure their full understanding of and commitment to the waste management plan
prepare for implementation activities by identifying and organising required personnel and equipment, as specified in the range of conditions
monitor waste management procedures to ensure their compliance with objectives and targets
review and update the waste management plan to incorporate identified improvements
follow organisational procedures to work safely and comply with regulatory and legal requirements.
Evidence of Knowledge
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:
classifications of waste
hazards and risks associated with waste including hazardous substances and dangerous goods
organisational policies and procedures and regulatory and legal requirements relating to waste management planning
waste assessment review processes, including:
analysing waste practices
analysing previous assessment plans and assessment processes
incorporating standard audit requirements and procedures
incorporating nature and significance of waste minimisation hierarchy
incorporating types of client waste management surveys and their uses
waste containment methods
waste disposal and recovery methods
waste non-conformances
waste resource recovery and management options
waste types, streams and characteristics.
Assessment Conditions
The following must be present and available to learners during assessment activities:
equipment:
computer and relevant software to document waste management plans and reports
personal protective equipment (PPE), as specified by organisational requirements
relationships with team members and supervisor:
working in a team.
Timeframe:
as specified by organisational requirements.
Assessor requirements
As a minimum, assessors must satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) current at the time of assessment.
