This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to select and obtain waste management plant, equipment and materials to meet service requirements. The unit covers sourcing and obtaining plant, equipment and materials which are fit for purpose based on an assessment of performance characteristics, usage patterns and budget constraints. The unit also covers negotiating with suppliers relating to purchase, hire and leasing options, and maintaining industry relationships and supply networks.
The unit supports those who work in lead roles in a waste management team.

Evidence of Performance
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.
The person must also select and obtain plant, equipment and materials to meet the waste management service requirements on two separate occasions.
While selecting and obtaining waste management plant, equipment and materials, the person must:
consult with relevant personnel to identify waste management service requirements
negotiate with suppliers regarding the purchase, hire or lease of plant, equipment and materials
source and obtain plant, equipment and materials which are fit for purpose and suit organisational budget and usage patterns based on an assessment of performance characteristics
maintain industry relationships and supply networks to access up-to-date information and ensure optimal stock levels are maintained
follow organisational procedures to work safely and comply with regulatory and legal requirements relating to procurement of plant, equipment and materials
record and report details of procurement activities using organisational proformas.
Evidence of Knowledge
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:
classifications of waste
hazards and risks associated with waste including hazardous substances and dangerous goods
organisational policies and procedures and regulatory and legal requirements, including contractual requirements, relating to purchasing, hiring and leasing waste management plant, equipment and materials
performance characteristics of plant, equipment and materials used for waste management, as specified in the range of conditions
types, and suppliers of plant, equipment and materials used to provide waste management services.
Assessment Conditions
The following must be present and available to learners during assessment activities:
equipment:

Assessor requirements
As a minimum, assessors must satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) current at the time of assessment.
