Application
This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to educate clients on waste management. The unit covers conducting research to identify current waste management issues, trends and client information needs, and selecting target groups requiring education. The unit also covers planning, documenting and delivering waste management information sessions to clients including providing clients with assistance to source and access additional industry information as required. It requires the ability to present relevant information which engages the target audience, and use communication skills which facilitate understanding.
The unit supports those who work in lead roles in a waste management team.

Evidence of Performance
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.
The person must plan, document and present waste management information to clients on two separate occasions.
While educating clients on waste management, the person must:
conduct research to identify current waste management information and issues, and plan waste management information provision to selected target client groups
match waste management information provision to identified client education needs
present waste management information clearly and concisely using active listening and questioning strategies
use presentation techniques which summarise key points and focus on key messages
use a computer to document waste management information
collate and disseminate appropriate industry information to assist clients to source required waste management information
follow organisational procedures and comply with regulatory and legal requirements.
Evidence of Knowledge
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:
classifications of waste
environmental issues relating to life cycle of products and renewable energy
hazards and risks associated with waste management including hazardous substances and dangerous goods
licensing issues in waste management
organisational policies and procedures and regulatory and legal requirements relating to educating clients on waste management
range of services provided by waste management organisations
waste assessment processes
waste containment methods
waste disposal and recovery methods
waste types, streams, characteristics and non-conformances.
Assessment Conditions
The following must be present and available to learners during assessment activities:

Assessor requirements
As a minimum, assessors must satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) current at the time of assessment.
