Undertake waste process audits

Application

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to carry out waste process audits to meet client requirements. The unit covers consulting with clients and site personnel to identify the audit objectives, and negotiate and agree on audit processes and site requirements to minimise disruption to processes and operations. The unit also covers identifying and managing hazards and risk at the audit site, and conducting a waste process audit including quantifying, characterising and sourcing waste streams and processes, and interviewing site personnel to gather additional operational information. The unit requires audit activity details to be recorded and audit data to be compiled and presented.

The unit supports those who work in lead roles in a waste management team.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1.

Waste process audit objectives are identified from consultation withrelevant personnel and organisational procedures, and where available, findings of waste assessments.

1.2.

Written approval for waste process audit is obtained from client according to organisational requirements.

1.3.

Equipment required to conduct waste process audit is obtained and used according to organisational requirements.

1.4.

Specific site requirements are identified and followed in consultation with client according to organisational requirements.

1.5.

Hazards and risks are identified and managed or reported according to organisational and compliance requirements.

1.6.

Waste process audit is organised to cause minimum disruption to site processes and operations.

2.

Carry out waste process audit activities.

2.4.

Relevant personnel are interviewed to identify operational and process characteristics.

3.

Record and report waste process audit findings.

3.1.

Waste process audit data is compiled and presented to client according to organisational requirements.

3.2.

Details of waste process audit activities are recorded according to organisational requirements.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.

The person must also undertake two waste process audits.

While conducting above waste process audits, the person must:

consult with client to negotiate, agree and organise auditing processes and timeframes and obtain the client’s written approval for the audit

identify and comply with specific site requirements, as specified in the range of conditions

work safely to identify and manage or report hazards and risks at the audit site, and while using equipment, as specified in the range of conditions

interview site personnel to obtain operational and waste information

observe, assess and record waste processes including quantifying, characterising and sourcing produced waste streams to identify how and why they are generated

compile and present waste process audit findings

follow organisational policies and procedures and regulatory and legal requirements.

Evidence of Knowledge

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:

classifications of waste

hazards and risks associated with waste including hazardous substances and dangerous goods

industry-accepted waste audit processes, including:

types of client waste management surveys and their uses

site scoping

organisational policies and procedures and regulatory and legal requirements relating to waste process audits

waste containment methods
