This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to identify the information needs of the general public on waste management, and to make provision for public education to meet those needs. The unit covers identifying education objectives and target groups as well as the education medium suitable to the target group, and presenting accurate information on waste management. The unit requires evaluating the education program to identify and implement improvements.
The unit supports those who work in a management role within a waste management environment.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of endorsement.

Evidence of Performance
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.
The person must prepare and present information on waste management to the public on two occasions. On each occasion, the person must:
establish educational objectives for providing information to public target groups:
through review of common public inquiries, public compliance levels and waste management trends and issues
confirming target group requirements through discussion with clients, general public, local government and relevant interest groups
incorporating legislation and codes and environmental policy
prepare educational presentation on waste management:
relevant to the needs of the target group
focusing on key messages to be delivered
using up-to-date and relevant educational mediums
present information on waste management to the target group:
using suitable strategies to communicate waste management information clearly and in a manner suitable to the learning needs of the target group
seeking clarification and confirmation of understanding from target group in a timely manner
providing details of organisational waste management services on offer to assist in future service provision as required
providing information on responsibilities of community, government and industry services where possible
seek feedback from target group regarding the effectiveness of the session in meeting educational objectives
suggest continuous improvement for future sessions by incorporating lessons learned from session presented and feedback sought from target group.

Assessor requirements
As a minimum, assessors must satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) current at the time of assessment.
