CUABRD401
Carry out television transmission operations

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to record and replay material for television transmission in line with television technical standards and production requirements.

It applies to individuals who maintain the technical quality of vision and audio signals that go to air. Even though they may work directly under a supervisor, they frequently carry a high level of responsibility for their own activities and can be responsible for supervising others.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Set up for video recording

1.1 Confirm production and transmission requirements and accuracy of documentation with relevant broadcast operations and production personnel

1.2 Plan and organise workflow to meet production and transmission deadlines

1.3 Note instructions relating to addition of time codes, durations and cue points

1.4 Check equipment is compatible with designated video formats and convert source materials as required

1.5 Contribute to creative discussions about achieving the best outcomes for productions and transmissions

1.6 Align, connect, prepare and test equipment consistent with recording and test signal protocols and safety procedures

1.7 Resolve equipment problems that could affect completion of work within timelines

2. Capture and monitor feeds

2.1 Liaise with master control to access required feeds for recording content and patch to appropriate equipment

2.2 Record content in line with production or transmission schedules

2.3 Arrange ingestion of pre-recorded content and insert time codes where applicable

2.4 Monitor and adjust quality of vision and audio feeds in line with enterprise technical standards

2.5 Liaise with production areas during recording sessions to monitor and adjust quality of vision and audio feeds

2.6 Check supplies of stock and consumables are sufficient to meet needs

2.7 Set time code type to meet post-production requirements and the need to synchronise with other equipment

2.8 Complete video operations and store materials according to file management protocols

3. Replay for transmission and production

3.1 Check documentation and verify production and transmission requirements with relevant personnel

3.2 Check nominated replay segments are correctly identified and stored according to enterprise standards and protocols

3.3 Cue tapes and recordings to meet transmission and production requirements

3.4 Set replay parameters and replay as directed

3.5 Record and rewind instant replays in accordance with production and transmission requirements

3.6 Monitor and adjust incoming and outgoing signals according to enterprise standards and protocols

4. Finalise video operations

4.1 Complete and distribute documentation according to enterprise procedures

4.2 Dub duplicate recordings to designated media format for back-up or archiving

4.3 Check condition of equipment, arrange for faults to be repaired and leave workplace in original or improved state

4.4 Review and reflect on performance and note areas for improvement

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

prepare video material in correct format for television transmission

set up and check recording equipment is working to specifications

interpret and apply production and transmission instructions and schedules

record content for broadcast from feeds, in collaboration with others

take responsibility for quality of audio and video feeds in line with production requirements and enterprise procedures

cue and replay material to air in line with production requirements

prepare and store back-up recordings according to enterprise procedures

complete workplace documentation in a timely fashion.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

outline current technical standards for television production and transmission

outline enterprise protocols and safety procedures for preparation of video material for television transmission

describe roles and responsibilities of personnel in broadcast operations and production

explain the relevance of time codes, durations and cue points for video recording

outline methods for checking that equipment and video formats are compatible, and for converting incompatible source materials

identify typical problems that may arise in the context of television transmission operations and briefly describe solutions

explain the process for reviewing quality of video and audio feeds

outline typical procedures for backing up and storing recordings.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

a television broadcasting facility

materials to be prepared for television broadcast

interaction with others.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
