CUABRT403
Ensure quality of broadcast output

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to monitor and maintain quality broadcast output from television and/or radio broadcasting facilities.

It applies to individuals who work with minimum supervision to plan and manage production and may, on occasion, be responsible for supervising others.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Maintain quality control for broadcast systems

1.1 Check correct output level devices are placed in circuit to correct for losses, deficiencies or degradation

1.2 Make adjustments to broadcasting equipment safely, with reference to equipment and maintenance manuals as required

1.3 Check play out source to adjust levels if required

1.4 Monitor and track the signal source, and where there are problems, determine arrangements for rectification in consultation with relevant personnel

1.5 Monitor performance and condition of broadcast systems and broadcasting equipment according to enterprise procedures

1.6 Document all maintenance routines and findings

1.7 Confirm purpose of data analysis with relevant personnel

1.8 Obtain relevant test data and resolve any data inconsistencies

1.9 Analyse data using enterprise methods and procedures

1.10 Check data analysis is accurate and thorough and takes account of test conditions

1.11 Compare data analysis with product or asset specifications to identify faults or variations

1.12 Record results of data analyses in the appropriate format

2. Rectify distortion problems

2.1 Use appropriate test equipment to test broadcast outputs are within specification and phase, following safe work practices

2.2 Use level meters to check frequency responses

2.3 Report noise and discuss distortion problems to relevant personnel

2.4 Resolve distortion problems according to enterprise procedures

3. Monitor quality of broadcast output

3.1 Check and calibrate monitoring equipment to ensure it is functioning correctly

3.2 Analyse broadcast output to identify problems and faults

3.3 Check inbound and outbound equipment, satellite and telecom units

3.4 Monitor quality of transmission according to enterprise operating procedures

3.5 Carry out monitoring activities effectively with minimum disruption to broadcasting operations

3.6 Determine problems with transmission and take remedial action as required

3.7 Record details of monitoring activity according to enterprise procedures and industry regulations and standards

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

check, monitor and adjust audio and/or image quality output with minimum disruption to broadcast operations

conduct analysis of test data and record results in accordance with required methods and procedures

test and rectify distortion problems using appropriate test equipment

document system monitoring, modifications and data analysis according to enterprise procedures, and regulatory and industry standards.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

outline the enterprise-specific broadcast output systems and equipment

explain methods and procedures for monitoring performance and analysing data

list and briefly describe the measurement equipment used for testing the quality of broadcast output

identify industry regulations and standards relevant to control of broadcast output systems

outline typical problems that arise in maintaining quality broadcasting output and how to handle these

identify work health and safety requirements as they relate to testing, monitoring and rectifying broadcast outputs.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

broadcasting facilities and system

broadcast output monitoring and data analysis test equipment

supplier manuals and other information relevant to broadcast output systems

industry regulations and standards.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
