Collaborate on the design of broadcasting facilities

Application

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge needed to collaborate on the design of television or radio broadcasting facilities.

It applies to individuals responsible for working with clients to determine the best way of designing facilities that meets current needs and, wherever possible, anticipates future needs. They must have highly developed liaison and negotiation skills, and be good communicators. They generally work on a contract basis or with companies that specialise in the design and installation of broadcasting facilities.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Clarify design requirements

1.1 Confirm overall objectives for proposed broadcasting facilities in consultation with relevant personnel

1.2 Identify factors, including technological change, that may impact how facilities are designed, including for future needs

1.3 Research the market for complete solutions that could meet the design objectives

1.4 Research and assess the range of equipment available to meet facility requirements and check compatibility with existing systems or infrastructure if applicable

1.5 Discuss the range of solutions with clients and other relevant personnel and reach agreement on preferred approach

1.6 Document agreed approach and obtain sign-off from relevant personnel to proceed with detailed design specifications

2. Collaborate on determining design approach

2.1 Generate and evaluate design options that are realistic in terms of budget, users, servicing, network integrity and timelines

2.2 Advise clients on capital equipment purchases that may influence choice of design option

2.3 Evaluate options and select the one that best meets project objectives, taking the budget into account

2.4 Discuss selected option with client and amend as required to incorporate their feedback

2.5 Prepare information, diagrams and equipment specifications to support agreed design option

2.6 Discuss design brief with personnel involved in implementation of design and incorporate their ideas into overall approach

3. Finalise designs

3.1 Check proposal complies with relevant industry regulations and standards, including work health and safety (WHS) and copyright

3.2 Prepare design plans that specify work, equipment, personnel and materials required, as well as arrangements for contractors and equipment purchase or hire

3.3 Prepare detailed drawings and specifications to support design plans, using a range of formats, design techniques and standard drawing notations

3.4 Prepare documentation relating to installation or modification, testing and ongoing operations and maintenance, and attach to design plans

3.5 Discuss and confirm additional requirements or modifications to design plans with relevant personnel

3.6 Discuss intellectual property and copyright protection with client and obtain final sign-off on design plans from client

3.7 Evaluate self and design process and note areas for improvement

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

research, assess and document possible design solutions in response to a design proposal

discuss the possible solutions with the client and other personnel and document agreed approach

collaboratively design a plan that meets client requirements in terms of budget, users, servicing, network integrity, timelines and compliance with regulations and standards

prepare detailed drawings, documentation and specifications to support the plan that include details about equipment, personnel, materials, installation, testing and ongoing operations, and maintenance specifications.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

list and describe technologies, systems, equipment, infrastructure and networks used in a typical radio or television broadcast facility

describe the impact of technological changes on design, installation and maintenance of broadcasting facilities

identify industry regulations and standards that govern design of broadcasting facilities

outline various formats and techniques for documenting the design of broadcasting facilities

identify laws and regulations that relate to design and installation of broadcasting facilities.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

situations requiring design of broadcasting facilities

interaction with others

information on industry regulations and standards relevant to the design and installation of broadcasting facilities.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
