Experiment with ceramic surface treatments


Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to proactively experiment with various ceramic surface treatments and design concepts to decorate a range of ceramic pieces.

It applies to individuals who are still developing technical skills and a personal repertoire of treatments. Individuals often produce work at a preprofessional level for sale in outlets such as markets and fairs. They work independently with limited supervision and guidance as required.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Develop ideas for ceramic surface treatments

3.4 Modify applications according to required effect, and identify and resolve technical problems with surface treatments

3.5 Label ceramic surface treatment materials and store safely

3.6 Handle equipment, tools and materials safely; minimise and safely dispose of waste throughout production of ceramic work

3.7 Document development of own work and the research and ideas that informed it

4. Evaluate own work

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

summarise methods used to research creative and technical approaches to surface treated ceramic work

explain how the works of other practitioners may be used to inform individual practice

describe the role of experimentation in developing and refining ideas for surface treatment work and how it relates to the development of an individual style

explain ways to adapt, extend and combine the capabilities of a wide range of surface treatment techniques

describe, for the elements and principles of design, the detailed characteristics, key interrelationships, use in surface treated ceramic work and how they may be challenged

list and describe the physical properties and capabilities of a wide range of materials used to produce ceramic work

list suppliers of resources for professional ceramic practice with particular emphasis on surface treatment materials

describe practices and procedures for working safely and sustainably with materials, tools and equipment for producing ceramic works.


Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

equipment, tools and materials used to produce surface treated ceramic work

relevant information sources.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
