Application
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to prepare costume items and dress performers for live performances or screen productions.
At this level, individuals are required to use some discretion and judgement and operate under broad supervision within an established framework of plans and procedures as they take responsibility for assisting performers whose role could require frequent costume changes.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare to dress performers | 1.1 Interpret production or other documentation to determine costume requirements 1.2 Ensure that costume and accessory labels are accurate and securely attached and re-label where necessary 1.3 Ensure relevant costumes, items and accessories are available at the appropriate location at the right time, and that costumes are handled with care to minimise damage 1.4 Organise all costumes and accessories into a line-up to meet the requirements of production schedules and running sheets 1.5 Make costumes available to performers so that they have sufficient time to dress for calls 1.6 Secure all costume items and accessories to minimise theft or damage before, during and after productions |
2. Dress performers ready for call | 2.1 Assist performers to dress and change costumes according to design, performer and production requirements, with minimum damage to costumes 2.2 Comply with performer requests relating to costume requirements or accurately communicate them to relevant personnel 2.3 Observe personal and production etiquette and protocols throughout the dressing process 2.4 Use equipment safely and according to manufacturer instructions throughout the dressing process |
3. Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.
Evidence of Knowledge
To complete the unit requirements the individual must:
describe appropriate behaviour and protocols in relation to dressing performers
provide examples of production schedule terminology
describe the format and meaning of production documentation used by dressers
describe work health and safety (WHS) regulations that affect the role of dressers.
Assessment Conditions
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to costumes and accessories to dress performers.
Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
