Maintain costume continuity


Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to maintain costume continuity for productions in the screen, media and entertainment industries.

It applies to individuals responsible for checking the appearance of performers' costumes is consistent from one take to the next on film shoots, or between scenes requiring costume changes in live theatre productions. On film shoots, they facilitate the post-production process by tracking details of each shooting session, as many scenes are shot out of sequence. They work closely with continuity or script supervisors.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Maintain continuity of performers' appearance during productions

1.1 Develop and update continuity documentation throughout productions

1.2 Re-dress performers throughout productions to maintain continuity of appearance and make required adjustments to costumes at appropriate times

1.3 Take continuity photographs and notes throughout productions and file for reference purposes

1.4 Recognise possible scripted and unscripted inconsistencies that might impact performers’ costumes and plan action accordingly

1.5 Ensure relevant personnel have access to continuity records as required

1.6 Perform continuity activity with regard to production etiquette and protocols and the needs of others on set

2. Maintain condition of costumes for continuity

2.1 Complete minor repairs or alterations to costumes within scope of own role, or refer to others for action

2.2 Clean and return costumes to production locations to meet continuity and production requirements

2.3 Address continuity and production requirements when major repairs to costumes are undertaken

3. Advise on costume continuity during productions

3.1 Advise relevant personnel promptly of changes to costumes and appearances

3.2 Advise production personnel and cast of approved changes to costume continuity as required

3.3 Advise relevant personnel of costume continuity issues according to workplace procedures and production requirements

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

interpret scripts when planning and undertaking continuity tasks for productions maintain continuity of performers’ costumes and accessories during productions

produce accurate documentation of costume continuity information

monitor and maintain condition of costumes for continuity during productions

take account of continuity issues when arranging costume repairs or alterations

provide updates about continuity issues to relevant personnel.

Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

describe protocols in relation to undertaking costume continuity tasks on film shoots or during live productions

outline roles and responsibilities of production personnel who need to be aware of continuity issues

describe elements of costumes that require particular attention for continuity purposes

explain continuity conventions in relation to how aspects of costumes are viewed by audiences or captured on camera

describe administrative procedures and documentation associated with costume continuity.


Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

productions requiring a range of costume changes

basic costume repair kit

costumes and costume accessories.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
