Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to construct typical components for costumes worn in screen, media and entertainment industry productions.

It applies to individuals who integrate individualised sewing and construction techniques with a variety of other independent classic or standard techniques common to many costume designs. Emphasis in construction is on functionality, durability, wearer comfort and compliance with design specifications.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare to construct costume components

1.1 Identify costume components, their functionality and relationship to the entire costume requirements, in consultation with relevant personnel

1.4 Plan sequence of operations for constructing components

2. Produce a range of costume components

2.1 Follow planned sequence of construction operations and seek assistance from others as required

2.2 Follow work health and safety (WHS) procedures and manufacturer's specifications when using sewing and cutting machinery

2.3 Handle different combinations of fabrics and notions during the construction process

2.4 Use a range of costume construction techniques to produce sample components that meet quality and functional requirements

2.5 Seek feedback on samples from relevant personnel and agree on modifications or improvements

2.6 Finish costume components within agreed timeframes

3.1 Compile work samples showing development of techniques and components

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

determine the most efficient way to construct costume components to meet functional and production requirements

develop and follow a sequence of operations for constructing a variety of costume components

use a sewing machine competently and safely

sew and finish costume components that meet functional requirements and costume production deadlines

document the process of constructing costume components.

Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

identify sources of supply for materials typically required for construction of costume components

outline roles and responsibilities of personnel involved in costume design and construction

explain properties and characteristics of a range of fabrics typically used to construct costume components

identify typical problems that arise in the context of constructing costume components and briefly describe solutions

outline typical costume components

explain functionality in relation to costumes for performance

describe safety procedures that apply to using equipment and machinery to make costume components.


Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

notions, fabric and equipment used to produce costume components

productions for which costume components need to be constructed

costume specifications.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
