Make specialised costumes

Application

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to construct costumes where products other than traditional textiles are an integral part of the costume design.

Individuals who apply these skills are expected to display a high level of initiative and judgement as they take responsibility for ensuring the quality of specialised costumes required for productions. They may be responsible for supervising others.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance Criteria

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Determine requirements for specialised costumes

1.1 In consultation with relevant personnel, use design sketches and other production documentation to determine the need for hard and soft sculptured specialised costumes

1.2 Undertake research to establish the broad parameters for costume construction, including availability of materials

1.3 Use research material to adapt costume designs for specific productions

1.4 Identify performance and performers’ costume requirements to ensure that costume construction is practical and appropriate to performances

2. Develop specifications for specialised costumes

2.1 Through experimentation and testing, determine the equipment, tools, materials and techniques to be used

2.2 Determine correct quantity and cost of materials required for construction to ensure efficient use of resources

2.3 Produce accurate working drawings and specifications for specialised costumes

2.4 Seek assistance from other departments or personnel as required

3. Create and fit specialised costumes

3.1 Take and record accurate measurements of performers

3.2 Develop pattern shapes to meet design specifications

3.3 Select materials for supports and bases to meet production requirements

3.4 Construct internal supports, fabric base and outer costume to achieve the requirements and specifications of performance, performers and design

3.5 Conduct fittings with performers and identify, record and action required adjustments and alterations

3.6 Complete specialised costumes in line with all production requirements

4. Assemble and fit specialised costumes

4.1 Conduct fittings with performers and identify, record and action required adjustments and alterations

4.2 Sew costume pieces together to form the whole costume and attach required trimmings, fasteners and decorations using appropriate techniques

4.3 Finish specialised costumes according to requirements

4.4 Identify modifications to costume in consultation with relevant personnel and complete as required

4.5 Correctly label and code all costumes for identification during productions

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

use appropriate techniques to construct costumes that incorporate materials other than traditional textiles for at least one production

follow safety procedures when using costume-making equipment and materials

work collaboratively.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.

Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements the individual must describe:

typical problems and challenges encountered when constructing specialised costumes, along with solutions to address them

the features of, and purpose for, a range of specialised costumes

the different materials, their properties and uses in specialised costume construction

techniques for working with materials other than traditional textiles in costume construction.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to costume specifications, materials and production schedules.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Foundation Skills

This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.
