Application

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to interpret costume designs and supervise the manufacture of costumes for productions in the screen, media, entertainment and events industries.

Individuals who apply these skills are expected to display a high level of initiative and judgement as they take responsibility for ensuring the quality of costumes manufactured for productions.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Determine production requirements

1.1 Liaise with relevant personnel to confirm costume requirements

1.2 Determine resource requirements with reference to costume designs and plots

1.3 Check that costume plots take account of visual effects requirements

1.4 Produce detailed and accurate costume breakdown lists from documented costume plots

1.5 Review budget allocated for costume manufacture and wardrobe operation and make decisions accordingly

1.6 Develop solutions to identified manufacturing problems and promptly communicate difficulties to relevant personnel

1.7 Obtain approval to amend designs as required before proceeding with work

1.8 Develop operational or project plans and schedules for making costumes according to design and production requirements

2. Select and purchase materials

2.1 Check existing stocks of materials or costumes for suitability of use for productions

2.2 Obtain measurements of cast/performers and establish required meterage of fabrics or materials to minimise wastage

2.3 Source and purchase suitable materials to ensure they can withstand the demands of productions and meet budgetary requirements

2.4 Ensure that materials are available in sufficient quantities and comply with work health and safety guidelines

2.5 Check that materials can undergo special effects requirements

3. Supervise costume manufacture

3.1 Oversee relevant personnel to ensure costume production requirements are met, quality standards are adhered to, and work health and safety guidelines are followed

3.2 Monitor budgets and timelines and take action as required to meet them

3.3 Make design specifications available to production staff at an appropriate time and assist in their interpretation

3.4 Coordinate involvement of external manufacturers or hirers involved in the production of specialist costume items to ensure timelines and quality guidelines are met

3.5 Participate in production meetings or costume parades and ensure that costume design modifications are agreed, noted and acted on

3.6 Inform relevant personnel of costume design changes

3.7 Update documentation and record and file according to organisational procedures

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

coordinate the process of manufacturing costumes for at least two productions

meet work deadlines in relation to the manufacture of costumes for productions

work collaboratively.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.


Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

describe content, features and formats of scripts, specifications and other production documentation

explain the steps in the process of interpreting costume designs in order to realise costumes

follow work health and safety requirements for costume construction

describe principles and techniques of costume construction, assembly and fitting

provide examples of supply sources for costume products

provide examples of typical costs and costing processes for costume manufacture

describe workflow planning and work organisation methods in a wardrobe department.


Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to costume specifications, materials and production schedules.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
