Develop foundation cultural dance technique


Application

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to build a solid foundation in one or more cultural dance styles under the supervision of experienced dancers and dance teachers.

Persons with some dance experience apply the skills and knowledge outlined in this unit. Experience would have been usually gained in community dance activities, often from an early age. However, this unit also applies to individuals with no prior training, but who have an aptitude for dance and an interest in developing technique in one or more cultural dance styles.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Review cultural dance styles

1.1 Discuss aspects of cultural dance styles with relevant personnel

1.2 Identify and use safe dance practices when developing cultural dance techniques

1.3 Discuss cultural protocols that need to be observed when performing selected cultural dance styles

1.4 Use dance terminology correctly in discussions

2. Practise simple movements

2.1 Under the guidance of a teacher or mentor, perform warm-up exercises

2.2 Practise basic steps associated with selected cultural dance style

2.3 Incorporate musicality, timing and rhythm into exercises

2.4 Work within own physical limits

2.5 Respond to constructive feedback and advice from others

2.6 Perform warm-down exercises after dance activity

3. Perform short cultural dance sequences

3.1 In consultation with others, agree on sequences that include a range of movements suitable to own technical ability

3.2 Match personal presentation to selected style of dance

3.3 Communicate the mood or style of dance sequence to spectators

3.4 Demonstrate a sense of timing and rhythm in performances

4. Review performance

4.1 Evaluate own performance in context of skill development needs

4.2 Use feedback from others to identify and develop ways to improve own dance technique

4.3 Set realistic goals for improvement and develop strategies to achieve them

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

perform two dance sequences that demonstrate a mastery of foundation dance techniques in selected cultural dance style

respond to constructive feedback on own performance.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.


Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

explain why the following aspects of safe dance practices are important:

warm-up and warm-down activities

correct clothing and footwear

healthy nutrition and diet

describe the cultural context of selected cultural dance styles.


Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to appropriate dance performance areas or spaces.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
