This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to evaluate and approve edits to ensure integrity of screen productions.

It applies to individuals responsible for communicating the overall creative vision and style for edits. They rely heavily on the ability of editors to interpret and realise the desired creative and narrative outcomes.

1. Prepare postproduction briefs

1.1 Organise and participate in meetings with production personnel to define post-production requirements

1.2 Establish creative and technical criteria for edits in close collaboration with production personnel

1.3 Establish post-production schedules to optimise creative outcomes in accordance with overall production timelines

1.4 Confirm editors have access to required editing materials to avoid delays to post-production activity

1.5 Establish contingency plans in consultation with production personnel to overcome post-production problems that could necessitate re-shoots

2. Monitor and evaluate editing activity

2.1 Work with editors to resolve any problems during the post-production stage and maximise their input to achieving final outcomes

2.2 Evaluate each stage of the editing process, in collaboration with relevant production personnel, and make adjustments to ensure that required creative and technical criteria are being met

2.3 Evaluate all aspects of the editing process from a director’s perspective, including own performance, and note areas for future improvement

2.4 Provide feedback to production personnel and invite comment on the post-production process

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

prepare post-production schedules and instructions that meet production timelines and include contingency plans for re-shoots

communicate concepts and ideas for achieving post-production objectives with editors and invite their input into strategies for achieving creative outcomes

evaluate and adjust work-in-progress in collaboration with editors

contribute to assessment of whether the post-production process achieved desired creative outcomes.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

outline how creative, production and post-production personnel interact during the post-production process

describe the impact of changing technology on post-production operations

identify typical problems when collaborating during post-production and briefly describe solutions

explain the process for editing screen productions

describe editing techniques for realising visual narratives.


Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

professional post-production facilities

material to be edited

post-production personnel.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
